The NFL should issue a public apology to the Panthers.

For The Jeremy Shockey call. That was an atrocious call, and it's starting to gain steam in the public eye. They were bashing it on NFLN earlier, Peter King was just discussing it on Twitter, local media has obviously called it out. I imagine it, along with Meriweather's helmet to helmet tackle, and a few other things, will be reported to The League.

So my questions to you are this..

1) Should the NFL issue a public apology to the Panthers for taking away a TD that ended up costing them the game?

2) Should controversial penalties be reviewed on the field, or at least challengeable?

Don't know if there is a worse feeling than having the officials sticking their nose where it doesn't belong and stealing a W away from you.

1) I don't really care, it's not going to change anything....

2) No

Since game 1 it was known we struggled in the redzone with penalties and in completions

Now its becoming ok you throwing poo just to throw it. Read Shockey comments. We said before this game it was going to be something. And nobody saying it just them I think we all know that. Those discussions are about that, this is about them

“I don’t know,” Shockey said. “Maybe the official saw something I didn’t. I would like the league to go back and look at that and given an explanation because it was a key play in the game and that call right there… that hurts our team’s momentum.”

Replays showed Shockey barely touched Chicago Bears defensive back Charles Tillman on a seam route around the 10-yard line, but the flag didn’t come until after Shockey hauled in the pass in the end zone.

Shockey was upset after the call and tried to get an explanation from the official as to what he did wrong, but said he was told to move on to the next play.

“We pay their salary and I can’t get an explanation,” Shockey said. “So I would like to see the explanation when (the officials) do get graded. I don’t understand. I have no idea. There were a couple of things out there where I asked them the question and they don’t tell me (anything). They should be held accountable as well. They get paid a lot of money. They get to hang out and do whatever they do before the game and fly for free and do all kinds of (stuff) for free. So it’s very disappointing and disheartening. I don’t know what else to say.

“I haven’t seen the film yet, but I know for a fact the flag was thrown after I was in the end zone and I was by myself. I hope the league reviews it because I’m baffled. I don’t know what the (expletive) they were thinking. He had no words for it. He said to move on to the next play and soon the (expletive) game is over.”

He led with the helmet and hit Smitty in the helmet.

The NFL told referees to start ejecting players for helmet to helmet hits in 2008.

You can hit a runner with your helmet. It happens in every game, every week.

Smith was no longer "defenseless reciever"......he was a runner. Different rules then apply on how you can hit him.

Come on man. It is absolutely illegal to launch yourself helmet first into the offensive players head, and that's exactly what happened. That wasn't incidental contact during the process of a tackle, he was trying to knock Smitty out with his head. How could you not see that? I guarantee you he will get fined for that hit. Not that it does us any good now though.

It is illegal to launch into a defenseless reciever (hit w/ your helmet). it is not illegal to hit a runner with your helmet. Smith wasn't in the process of making a catch (defenseless). There are rules that apply to defenseless recievers and QBs.....that do NOT apply when the QB or WR are "runners".

I guarantee he doesn't get a fine for that.

lol at Shockey..."they fly for free, they hang out and do whatever they want, we pay their salary..."

That's funny stuff. He's making a point, I get it, but I've never heard this angle taken to call out the refs.

The NFL establishment pulled all the stops to make sure Cam wasn't the #1 draft pick with their talking heads like Mel Kiper spewing bull poo, and now that Newton has come into the league silencing all his critics and even surprising his most ardent supporters with his performance on the field, his light is shining bright, but they can't let it shine too bright,.. hence the reason we have gotten all these touchdowns called back and red zone penalties the last 4 weeks.

I have never seen anything like it, the Ref actually waited to see if Shockey was going to catch the pass then he threw the flag, simliar thing happened versus Green Bay Cam ran for a 1st down in the Red Zone the ref waited to see where he fell then threw a flag on a bogus holding call on Gross.

Not helmet to helmet.

Sure you can. How many times this season do you think Stewart/Williams/Cam will get taken down w/ a helmet to helmet hit?

Rules are different for runners than recievers going for balls or QBs in the pocket.

The biggest tell tale sign is when the flags come out late.

Big play, blown dead, 10 to 15 seconds later a flag comes out for illegal procedure or some phantom hold, and it's called back. But there are almost never flags on lousy plays.

    • Neither Barkley nor even a healthy CMC would move the needle much for us. Those are guys that impact teams that already have impressive overall offenses and defenses, so they can perform the complimentary roles that make them actually valuable. We should know that specifically because CMC almost never moved the needle on bad Panthers team after bad Panthers team. Ask Giants fans about that with Saquon.
    • I would generally disagree. You see a lot more load management than previously but that is because being healthy in the playoffs is such a key factor. Different philosophies in that regard than previous generations.  Baseball really doesn't matter until at least halfway through the season. I am not gonna say they don't play hard but the physical demands are infinitesimal in the MLB in comparison to basically any other major pro sport.  People dislike all the shooting these days but that's a direct correlation with how much the overall skill level of the average NBA player has drastically risen over the past 15ish years. There are other aggravating factors, certainly, but that is the biggest one in terms of playing style differences. So many of the guys from the 80's and 90's wouldn't even be able to play in the modern NBA at all. The biggest problem the NBA has with the American market(they are the only US sport that has any real international appeal or interest, minus the NHL) is that they are so steadily corrupt and fix the systems against the small market teams. Well, you eventually lose a big chunk of the league viewership/potential viewership in the process. Take the very obviously fixed NBA draft lotteries. Superstar and upper tier star players rarely want to play for small market teams, nor can they usually afford to pay them. So how do you expect them to possibly compete in that environment?
