Panthers moving to a 3-4??? Says McDerm

Watch the Atlanta game, they had Johnson as the OLB and Hardy as a DE in the 3-4 looks. Johnson compares more comparable to Woodley and most 3-4 OLB in the NFL then Hardy does.

Having them play a few downs is not the same as every down. Johnson is much stronger than Hardy and is much better in defending double teams and protecting the edge. They are moving them around and trying to see what works. Trying to decide where people best fit based on what you saw in a game a few times on Sunday is totally speculative. You didn't even get the benefit of coach's film to see how they actually did.

Plain and simple we don't have good LB's for the 4-3. No way do we have the right LB's for 3-4. Our LB's right now aren't fast can't cover and miss tackles. All are skills you need even before we talk about size of the outside Lb. Which we don't have to play a 3-4.

Anderson compares to most OLB's in the 3-4 while Johnson would be the other one. Or it could be that Johnson and Applewhite are the OLB's, then carolina would have two of the bigger OLB's in the 3-4 in the NFL. Inside LB is all about speed. Anderson and Gaithers would be the two guys I think.

CJ has been standing up in a 3-4 OLB position, here and there, as early as the Jags game. I think he even got one of his sacks standing up.

All this means is that our 3rd and 4th DE is greater than our 3rd and 4th LB, and we're looking for a way to get them on the field.

i.e. Norwood and Applewhite.

When you think about it, it's actually exciting. At lease the coaching staff isn't sitting on their hands. It also gives us more beef up front.

I don't either but you also don't pay a 3-4 End 10 million a season, that's the OLB spot there. Too much of a waste on his talents and pay check to keep him as a 3-4 end. Hardy would have to bulk up big time and add 15 pounds of muscle if you ask me.

That's why I also say if the team does move to the 3-4 then DE becomes the second biggest need if ot the biggest unless the team really feels like McClain can play the role for them. In most cases unless Hardy beefs up, he's off the field in 3-4 packages

Hardy will beef up just like Johnson did. Hardy has a great frame to build on and a good motor. He still needs better technique and leverage but he is learning. I expect if we decide to make him an OLB we will keep him just as he is. If we go DT in a 3-4 he will put on 15 lbs or so (hopefully muscle).

Can't imagine having Charles Johnson dropping into coverage 1/3 of the time.

They've already done quite a bit of it already this season, he actually almost had a pick if the QB would have thrown the ball more accurately he would have. Also think he would be blitzed more often then not similar to what they were doing with Williams in Houston.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
