well releasing TD will clear some cap.

TD has a base salary of 2.25 million for 2012 and an 8 million option bonus. Option bonuses do not count against the cap until the team agrees to pick it up, which they obviously won't in this case. He also received a 7 million dollar signing bonus, the cap hit for which is prorated over the life of the contract (5 years), so 1.4 million cap hit each year.

Right now he is counting 3.65 million against the cap for 2012 (2.25 base, 1.4 bonus). Once released we will be off the hook for the 2.25 million base salary and option bonus, however the entire remainder of the signing bonus (5.6 million) will count against the cap immediately. So we will actually end up with 1.95 million less in cap space by releasing him this offseason than we do right now.

This is how it's been explained to me anyway. I'd like to see the official word once the move is made official.

i doubt anyone in these lists will hurt our cap. they aren't exactly in high demand and they shouldn't command much pay.

yeah you're right, i was talking about bringing in some decent free agents during the 2012 offseason. i'm not even worried about any moves we can make now. this season is done, my mind is already into 2012

Not really it would cost the team more right now to cut him if I'm not mistaken. The team currently has 2.3 million available.

correct, we don't have the cap space to absorb the hit right now

no. if rivera is serious about trying to get better and mcderm is serious about us moving to more of a 3-4, then you better believe we'll be looking outside our roster for help.

changes have to be made in scheme and in personnel. what we have here and now isn't working.

We can get better without adding anyone. Eliminate mistakes. Players and coaches.

Which means we are not trying to win until next year. Which was being said last year and the year before that. Sorry it is just unacceptable and getting old fast.

No one with any sense expected more than what we are seeing right now. It has taken the lions three seasons to get a winning record, and its going to take at least two for us. Have patience.
