Breaking Down "The Shot" - The first Madden NFL 10 screenshot

Here's a follow up post from a producer on this, explaining some dynamics behind things, the additions, and some new stuff.

This is a link to the new producer blog where Michael Young, the Art Director of Madden 2010, follows up and breaks down the screenshot released the other day, he provides more screenshots, and goes into detail about some improvements on the game. Very nice, loving the new screenshots, the DOF image thing is awesome. Giving a true focal point and providing less noise in the picture. Thoughts on this?

So that is an camera angle available in 2010, they are adding to the camera angles and improving the DOF effects that are in the game.

Depth of Field

For Madden NFL 10 and NCAA Football 10 we have an all new realistic Depth of Field system calibrated to match real world cameras. This single enhancement not only improves the visual quality of the game but it will allow us to reproduce a broadcast experience unlike ever before.

What is depth of field (DOF)?

DOF is a film/photography term used to describe the part of an image that appears sharp or in focus. In the image below Adrian Peterson is within the DOF thus appears to be sharp while the players in pursuit appear soft. These blurred or fuzzy areas are referred to as Bokeh. Notice how this bokeh allows the viewer to clearly isolate Peterson from the rest of the pack.

Single Digit Helmet #s

We have added the ability to center single digit #s on our helmets. Although a small touch, I know Steeler Nation (Including myself) will sleep well knowing Big Ben's helmet is accurate in the game. Ian was happy that we have the Giants correctly emulating this as well.

Super Bowl Patches

Teams will wear Super Bowl patches on their jerseys for the big game, whether you are reliving Super Bowl XLIII or in year 30 of your franchise.

Custom Super Bowl Fields

Utilizing the same tech as NCAA for custom bowl endzones and field art, Madden NFL 10 features team specific end zones, midfield logos, and player boxes that are dynamically configured whether you are reliving Super Bowl XLIII, or in year 30 of your franchise.

Towels

Authentic player towels are in and fully animating, complete with Wilson and NFL Equipment logos. They can be assigned to any player, but can not be moved to the middle of the body (unfortunately due to major clipping issues that were occurring).

Referees on the Field

Unlike last-gen which only had 5, we were able to get all 7 referees in to Madden NFL 10 with AI and a full suite of avoidance (and collision) animations.

Chain Gang on the Sidelines

Because you see it on Sunday, the chain gang has been added back. They dynamically move up and down the sideline giving clear indication of the first down spot and line of scrimmage.

Steelers Don't Wear Captains Patches

And they won't in our game either. Same goes for the Cowboys.

Secondary Color Equipment

Each player will be tagged with the proper color gear. Santonio Holmes wears yellow gloves, so expect him in yellow gloves.

Better Nameplates

Since Madden NFL 06, the letters on the back of the jerseys have all been somewhat squished to account for longer names like Houshmanzadeh. This has been fixed with a new dynamic sizing algorithm, so all names now look correct.

They actually listened to people who said Big Ben wasn't quite big enough, so they made him appear bigger in the game by adjusting his pads and such.

Fully animated towels is pretty cool as is the chain gang and on field refs.

Small touches but combined with the actual game play changes and everything else they've done, I'm really excited for madden for the first time since probably 2005.

NFL2K ftw

Agreed. I've switched lately for newer rosters outta the box, but damn I miss picking up the new 2k editions. Used to laugh about the lack of changes in Madden.

Back on track. Madden 10 actually looks interesting enough to pick up. More realistic players, better non-player ai, I'm listening....

All this shenanigans about paying $65 for a game. It is the equivalent of any other new released game on whatever console game so I don't know why everyone makes such a huge deal out of it. I personally only buy 2 games a year at most. Madden and then something else. Last year it was CoD World at War and I definitely didn't enjoy that one in comparison to CoD4.

Makes you feel better, COD6 is being brought back to modern warefare and is being made by IW. Don't buy odd numbered editions of the COD series they aren't made by the same people who make the even numbered ones.

Yeah I think that is ridiculous. COD4 was the only reason World at War did decently in sales and many people, like myself, were incredibly disappointed.

What? call of duty 1 is the best game ever!

IW made the first one, which was published by Activision, Who have a clause in there contracts that if a game sells well they reserve the right to the copyright of said game. Since then IW has made even numbered games while another development studio has made odd numbered games. 3 & 5 are the two in the series that aren't made by Infinity Ward and they were made by Treyarch.

This also happened with IW and the medal of honor series, they made the first one on PC which was published by EA and EA got copyright laws due to the contract agreement.

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
