Can Vikings handle Newton? (NFL Network Video)

Cam Newton vs AP

i've always hated it when two players on the same side of the ball are compared head to head like that - "will brady beat manning????" is stupid because brady is not directly playing against manning, he's playing against the defense, and that's where the matchups should be analyzed.

but here i think it's legit. the game hinges on how well these two players can perform on any given down. cam needs to make every throw count, because honestly the only way to take AP out of the game is by blowing up the scoreboard right off the bat.

similarly, AP needs to chew up as many yards per carry as possible, because the only way to take cam out of the game is by sustaining long drives and keeping our offense off the field.

defense had better bring it.

I like how Cam talks about Ponder being a rookie like he's already a five year vet himself. Speaking of we already played Gabbert, now it's Ponder, we may see Locker in the tennesee game. It seems like there are a lot more rookie vs rookie quarterback matchups this year than any other year I can remember.

The Vikes might be tough, though. Their secondary is struggling, but that front four is getting to people. They roughed up Aaron Rodgers a little which is not easy to do.

You get Minnesota out of that dome though, and they just don't seem as ferocious. I like our chances at home.

    • Our best ever FA signing was Wesley Walls, followed by Sam Mills, and Ken Lucas. I can't really even think of any other super impactful ones. I thought Keyshawn Johnson would be at the time, and he was alright, but nothing special. I think Lloyd could end up being in that upper tier with the first three I named but time will tell. He could be a long time leader on this defense. He's young and smart and is in the mold of the great Panthers LBs. I can't wait for the inevitable sit-down with Thomas Davis.
    • Great News! Now, if we can find a QB, we will be in the race.
    • On the whole, I thought the Panthers did the best job of any team during the first week of free agency and left with a much stronger roster. The team had two major needs on defense that people thought would be addressed early in the draft: pass rusher and off-ball linebacker. They promptly filled both by signing Jaelan Phillips to a massive four-year, $120 million contract and linebacker Devin Lloyd to a three-year, $45 million contract. Not only did the Panthers fill needs by signing the two players, but the vacancies left by Phillips in Philadelphia and Lloyd in Jacksonville are massive holes that those teams must address.  Carolina was not done, as they added offensive tackle Rasheed Walker, the four-year veteran who was previously with the Green Bay Packers, to a one-year deal. Considering the serious knee injury suffered by starting left tackle Ikem Ekwonu during the playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, an injury that could threaten his 2026 season, it was money well spent on another free agent. Heading towards the draft, the Panthers now have the luxury of looking at other positions. If tight end Kenyon Sadiq happens to fall to the 19 selection of the first round, he has to be a consideration, and they could also target a top cornerback. https://www.essentiallysports.com/nfl-active-news-five-nfl-teams-whose-free-agency-moves-changed-their-twenty-twenty-six-draft-plans/
