Mock Draft Mania

Yea this is a "redskins" draft database however it's not surprising that everybody seems to think we're gonna take a CB or WR in the first round. The tally goes something like this for the first ten.

Alshon Jeffery WR III

Morris Claiborne CB II

Dre Kirkpatrick CB II

Michael Floyd WR

Justin Blackmon WR

Brandon Thompson DT

I don't really agree with the consensus hierarchy because I think the defensive line is the next big thing we need to fix on this team, and a lot of these have us passing up Coples for these guys. It would be hard for me to pass him up if he dropped to our pick. Even if DE is not a glaring need, which it is not, despite Davis' career being over I don't want to spend yet another 1st round pick on a linebacker, and I think we're set at corner, and I like Thompson and Ta'amu, but not over Coples.

If you look at teams with the best defensive front I automatically have to cite the Giants. They've been dealing with injuries in their back 7 but they still are holding up because their front four is so talented. They harassed Fitzpatrick all day against Buffalo. Before that game Fitz had been knocked down 3 times all season and sacked only 3 times as well, until the Giants faced him, and knocked him down at least 4 times in addition to sacking him 3 times. This is a QB who throws the ball an average of 1.5 seconds after each snap btw. Yes Smith is on the wrong side of 30 but I think he's got some good years left so WR isn't an immediate need

I understand were you are coming from but we don't really need a DE. But he would probably be best player available.

You don't take BPA period, you take BPA at a position of need. Besides, I doubt Coples is available when we pick anyway. Even if he was, it's inefficient to spend your top draft pick on a DE when our two DEs we already have are the best two players on the defense right now (not counting the hurt Beason).

i didn't say he would definitely be, but in a lot of those mocks they have us picking corners while he is still available

I meant after the 1st. I just meant I don't think we can afford the luxury of taking a DE with our first round pick when we have some pretty important holes to fill right now. If there's a DE that looks like a good value later, I wouldn't speak ill of the choice to pick him. I just don't think we can afford the luxury of using our 1st round pick on a DE. If we're thinking that way, we might as well take a look at Trent Richardson or Landry Jones or Robert Griffin III while we're at it.

there are a lot of ways you can put the 3 of them on the field at the same time. For instance you can put either CJ or Coples in the interior on passing downs, and line up the other 2 at end. And I don't feel as though there's a huge dropoff between Thompson and lower ranked DTs that would be available when we pick in the 2nd.

it's not a luxury pick because we have a problem with getting to the passer. With Drew Brees, Freeman and Ryan in our division we're gonna have to get better at getting to the QB. Coples affords us the ability for D-line flexibility in a lot of ways, and he's a great talent. It's not like we're throwing Hardy away. Like I said on obvious passing downs you could put all 3 on the line with Edwards to take up some blockers and blitz one of your LBs up the middle, with Coples in the middle as well you're much more likely to collapse the pocket. It's not about "lets upgrade our starting DE" it's about adding a big nasty pass rusher you can utilize in a lot of different ways, alongside Hardy. His presence could also help Hardy make a lot of plays as well.

Not really. There is a big difference between taking possibly the best pass rusher in the draft that you can find ways to get on the field and will strengthen our defense, and taking a quarterback that won't see the field ever, or a running back who'll probably be third string in a passing offense.

Well, I was being facetious, but I just don't see getting all three on the field in a 4-3 and not give up a huge size difference. I just don't see it as big of an positive impact of taking a 2nd string DE (after Hardy and Johnson) on the team as taking a possible starting OT, WR or CB.

you're getting too hung up on the whole "starter" thing

OT and WR are also reasonable needs, but upgrading corner isn't going to do anything if there's no rush in the QB's face, and they have like 9 seconds to throw. Coples also has experience in the interior.

If we have the #4 pick which is about where we are currently, would you trade it for the 18th and 23rd pick that Cincy currently has? I think I would.

Get (2) a very good OT, WR, LB and DT at that point. No real playmakers beyond the QB's and WR's in the draft. Not our best option.

    • Facts it's still crazy that they made him sell over that especially considering what some of the other owners have done.  JR was a rich 80 year old white man from the south I'm not at all surprised about him making some "inappropriate" comments about what a woman is wearing water is wet what a surprise. That's just the way things were done during his time, and he should and did get punished for his actions by paying some hefty fines, but it definitely wasn't something that he should've been forced to sell his team over.  I'll never forget him insulting Peyton Manning during a negotiation, reportedly belittling the quarterback’s knowledge of player safety and asking, “Do I need to help you read a revenue chart, son?
    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
