How We Fall On D So Badly

The defense is why we lost this game today. We put up 35 points but that still wasn't enough. Our defense is swiss cheese. We dont even need to look at offensive players next draft. Every pick should be defense. Also, a new DC would be nice. McDermott sucks, he hasn't showed me a damn thing this season that lives up to all the hype he had when we brought him here.

I'm honestly humiliated. Worst loss of the season, surpassing last week.

Cam validated every pre-draft criticism of him today. Defense fell apart and allowed some loser to rush for 100+.

We hear all week opposing fans talk about how overrated Cam is, once they figure him and our offense out, that we will be stopped.

All this team has done so far is prove them right. Our coaching staff hasn't adapted. Cam has grown fundamentally sloppy and noone has stepped in to fix it. McDermott is horrid at in-game adjustments.

It's just....well....humiliating. I haven't felt this ashamed after a loss in quite some time.

I completely disagree about it being the worst loss.

Greater the game, greater the heartache in a loss.

The team came to play today, including our backup defense.

Seems to me nobody is giving the lions offense any credit. Stafford in a damn good qb, and players on their offense stepped up big time.

Cam missed on several key throws, high as usual. Steve smith is great, but he is not 10 feet tall, and we can't expect miracles

Our defense is what it is, a depleted defense.

They did great for a third of a game, before a good offense got going.

What? This is just silly. Last week was by far the worst game of the season, I was actually quite proud of our effort today. Cam is fine, he pressed a little today but actually responded well to a team that tried to play him the same way that Tennessee did last week. The fact that he responded as well as he did is a great sign, we just got beat by a collapse on defense against a team that was far more desperate today.

Nothing to be ashamed of in this loss.

The Panthers defense has not been dominating for a few years. Most of the decline is due to the D-Line. The d-line used to be a priority for the Panthers, but the last few years it seems to have been a very low priority. It started when:

1. They never replaced Kris Jenkins. Trading Jenkins was the right choice, but they never replaced him with a dominating DT. And it almost seems like the never even really tried (Some DT's since Jenkins: Corey Irvin, Nick Hayden, Darwin Walker, Damion Lewis, Ed Johson, Neblett, and Landri). None of these guys were/will never be a dominating DT. Also, Edwards was one of the biggest FA signing for the Panthers this season....and I would not say he would be a dominating DT next year..., and they drafted Fua and McClain in the 3rd round. Both are rookies, so I will give them both a pass at this point. Fua especially seems to be pushed around a lot.

2. They never replaced Kemo as a good run stuffer. See names above.

3. This d-line used to have high round draft picks: a #1 (Peppers), #2 (Rucker), #2 (Jenkins), #2 Bucker, #1 Lewis, #1 Brayton, and a highly wanted FA (Kemo).

Now: We have no draft picks above 3rd round starting or rotating on the d-line. Again, d-line low priority for Panthers. I think Johnson is the real deal. Hardy is a very good pass rusher, but at this point in his career does not play the run well.

4. Instead of using high picks on quality DT's or DE's, they wasted picks on Edwards (#2), E. Brown (#1), and I will also put Irvin (#3) on this list as he was always a project DT. The DE FA brought in were low budget guys....I can't even remember their names (one played for NC State).

5. The Panthers have been focusing on offense the last few drafts...and rightfully so. But, you can't win consistently in the NFL with a poor d-line. Having Beason & Davis healthy would be an upgrade, but I still don't think they could over-compensate for the poor d-line.

6. McDermott was chased out of Philadelphia for a reason. The Panthers average to below average defense last year, was better than this defense this year. Meeks/Fox had a more solid scheme. This years defense is undisciplined....and gives us big plays.

    • You are right. At the same time I don’t think people are watching games going come on Bryce put it on the ground or sail it OB or whatever. They just have trouble seeing him turning his 3 or four or five top games of 2025 into the weekly standard outing. Which you expect for the kind of money he will ask for (speaking for myself anyway).
    • In terms of comparing Pickett and Young's arm talent it's basically a push at best. Pickett is sitting at 6.2 yards per pass attempt for his career while Bryce sits at 6.0 Last season Bryce was 6.3 in yards per pass attempt. Only Justin Fields Spencer Rattler (both 6.2) Kyler Murray (6.0) 41 year old Joe Flacco (6.0) 44 year old Phillip Rivers (5.9) rookie Cam Ward (5.9) and Tyrod Taylor (5.8) had less pass yards per attempt than Bryce Young in his third season as a starter. Folks going around acting as if it is beyond the pale to say Pickett might have a better arm than Young are living in an alternate reality. You can choose to not believe your own eyes after 46 games but everyone else will acknowledge reality and move forward accordingly.
    • Wayne Gretzky yesterday said he is playing as good a series as he has ever seen from a defender. I thought that was pretty high praise.
