Quinton Coples

Stanford ran a 3-4 defense and Fua was the nose tackle.

Fua can't anchor a 4-3, much less a 3-4. Not in the NFL.

Let me be the first to say, I do not think DE is a top need of ours.. however, I think Coples would be a drastic upgrade over Hardy in terms of run stopping and I don't feel we would lose anything in pass rushing.

I'm not of the camp that believes Coples would be much (if any) of an upgrade over Hardy. I think people who think Hardy is a liability are just looking at sack numbers and thinking that tells the whole story for a DE. His only real flaw is that sometimes he over pursues letting a RB get to his gap, but he is in the backfield almost every play and plays the run a lot better than most seem to think. Coples looks good, but he's far from being the sure thing that Peppers, M. Williams or most top 5 or so picked DEs are. I don't think he's even as good a prospect as Quinn was.

I'm not a big fan of Coples. I watched a good bit of UNC's games this year and he never popped off the screen. I agree he has a lot of talent, he just doesn't pass the eyeball test.

Plus, he got 4 of his 7.5 sacks against James Madison and Duke. Disappears in big games.

I watched every UNC game this year and this is exactly how I feel

He should be dominating and half the time Kareem Martin fairs just as well as him.

In case that we are switching towards a 3-4 defense it would be ideal to trade down and accumulate more picks.

Draft Devon Still in the 20's, then Dontari Poe in the second and BPA corner/LB with the extra pick gathered from trading down in the first.

But...we're not switching to the 3-4. We're going to use it sometimes...just like we have been...

not quite..

Here is the article on switching to the 3-4 defense in the future.. I think we start picking up the pieces to transition to the 3-4.. it says we are keeping the 4-3 base defense (for this year). So Poe could be the NT we are looking for.

just like last year, i pretty much dismiss any mock that has us taking a DE.

it's a cliche....DE from UNC=panthers first round draft pick. we did it once so it must always be something we do. does it matter that johnson and hardy are both grading high and that the panther seem totally happy with CJ, hardy, applewhite, and keiser? does it matter that the problem with the pass rush and our inability to stop rushers is because of our weakness at DT?

it's just like TE was a few years ago. everyone had us going after a TE even though it was obvious to anyone who was really paying attention that fox didn't use the TEs the way the experts thought we should.

    • I see they blamed Slavin for the goal like I did.
    • See this is the problem, you say "can't get off the line quick" and "can't separate quick" but in reality it's "he can get off the line better and create more separation" which are two completely different things. If he couldn't get off the line or separate, he wouldn't have put up the numbers he did and end up a Top 10 pick. But he can get better, and maybe more accurately, consistent with them both, and that will take his game to the next level.  These are things that are also much easier to improve once you get to the NFL than things like being a poor route runner or having bad hands, two of his strengths. Thinking he can't get open in the short passing game also shows you haven't watched enough tape on him, as he was used in that role so much in college with little issue getting open and making plays. And him not using his physicality as much isn't even something that hurts his game because he's so much more agile than a player of his size should be, which he used to his advantage.  Instead of throwing passes where he'd go up and box out a player like a TE or Mike Evans does, they use his athleticism and put the ball in places that only he can get to it, and he usually does (and yes, he'll still be able to do that against NFL DB's with his catch radius). But now that he's in the NFL, I'd like to see him get stronger and add that to his game because it also will help him take his game to another level. As I've said before, if he doesn't improve on those things at all, I think he's a Top 25 WR in this league, he's already that good.  But I think he'll improve on those things and be a perennial Top 10 WR and in his prime is considered and perform like Top 5 guy in some years. My expectations for him this year at 800 yards and 8 TDs (although I do think he'll get to 10 TDs) with a real chance at getting to 1,000.  But those expectations are because I think Thielen will lead the team in yards with close to 1k and XL/Coker each end up in the 500-600 range themselves, just too many mouths to feed this year for a rookie to dominate yardage, especially if we're running the ball well again. But if Thielen can't stay healthy or puts up sub 750 yards, then yea, my expectations for T-Mac likely shift to getting to 1k as a rookie.
    • Svech only 1 goal behind the guy they've pretty much already given the Conn Smythe to...
