Deangelo Williams 2011 vs 2008

many of you think deangelo has fallen off but this is simply FAR from the truth if you take a moment to look at stats you'll see what im talking about.

2008

Carries: 273

Yards: 1515

td:18

Yards per attempt: 5.5

2011

Carries: 126

yards: 656

td: 4

yards per attempt: 5.2

The most important stat for a running back is yards per attempt next is rushing yards. If you add 147 more carries to his 126 equaling the amount he had in 2008 deangelo would have around 1400 yards on the ground at the end of the year. If this was still foxball deangelo would be in the running for the rushing title and a lock for the probowl.

Thank you!! Too lazy to look this up, but I've been saying it all year.

I also think that they are purposely trying to preserve both backs by nit giving them many carries.

It also allows for our QB to develop faster.

This coaching staff knows what they're doing... Even though I sometimes question their "situational football" play calls and game management. I think this is all a part of their master plan to dominate next season.

Edit: I must spread swag before giving it to IRV again

I'd like for you to look at the negative or 1 yard runs in 2011 vs. 2008. DeAngelo isn't as good as creating as he was......

and no, it isn't all the OL. Stewart doesn't get bottled up w/ as much frequecy......and Stewart is built to need a hole more so than Williams.

In 2008, over half of Williams yards and touchdowns came on 39 carries. He had 39 carries that went over 10 yards for 841 yards, a 21.6 ypc and 10 touchdowns. He's always gotten stopped for 1-2 yard gains, he's also always broke out big gains as well though.

If you take those runs away from his total for that season, his numbers would be 234 carries for 676 yards for a 2.9 ypc average and 10 touchdowns. So yes he got stopped for a lot of 1 or 2 yard carries back in 2008 as well.

Edit: To further compare the long runs,

In 2009 he had 36 carries of over 10 yards for 676 yards, 18.8 YPC and 4 Touchdowns.

this season Williams has 13 carries over 10 yards.

13 carries - 363 yards -27.6 YPC - 3 TD's

So 39 of 273 carries in 2008, 36 of 216 in 2009, and then 13 of 126 carries this season.

That breaks down to the following:

1 in 7 carries went for 10+ in 2008, 1 in 6 carries in 2009 and finally 1 in 9 carries this season.

I hate to see someone like Williams and Stewart having so few carries but if it is only a one year deal to develop Cam then I am all for it. Williams stats aren't that bad considering the carries. The only stat that is really down is touchdowns which is due to the fact we are using Cam on the goal line to punch it in which has been very succesful.

Next year we need to change the Game plan and run the ball more which will set up for play action and big plays down field. I remember watching us run almost every play against a drive in the Detroit game and it made me think how great our team could be if we ran a lot more. More running means less turnovers and bad throws from Cam, more rest for the D and the longer our D is off the field the better, not to mention we now have a 3 headed monster because we have basically 3 rbs.

Those numbers are skewed a little though...Take away his 74 yard td and his 69 yard td run. The majority of his runs, he is getting stuffed.

Take away the long runs?

If you take away Cam's rushing TD's he is not doing as well either. If you take away the long catches from Steve Smith, he sucks too. Holy hell...let's just not count any runs over 2 yards, and his ypc really sucks.

Its not like we are talking about a bunch of them...We are talking about 2..2 of his 126 carries. 124 carries for 503 and a 3.2 ypc average.

I think his point is, he still made those plays. If you're going to take away his big plays from 2011, you'd have to do the same from 2008 and I think that would still put the two seasons in a similar category. What you're saying is that we should take something away from Deangelo for making a few big plays when you really should do the opposite.

Our offensive line isn't as good as it was in 2008.

look at Stewart in 2011 vs. Williams in terms of negative and 1 yard runs. Can't blame the OL. Stewart is the back that "needs" the holes per the entire time the duo has existed......but Stewart doesn't get bottled up like Williams now. Williams doesn't create as well as he did in prior years.
