Did we do enough to woo Mario Williams?

Guys we have almost have the worst defense in the league and our bright spots are CJ and Hardy. The money HAS to go somewhere else. We have no one playing at DT, question marks playing LB and a secondary that is very inconsistent. Our DEs are actually playing decent, consistently.

Unless Mario Williams can pack on some pounds and move inside, I don't think defensive end is the position we need to be concentrating and spending big money on in this coming offseason.

I can agree with this to a point, however, flip side........we can all agree that we NEED defensive playmakers and Mario is a proven one! How bad does the front office want to win? Local homeboy that will sell a lot of jerseys and put a lot of butts in seats! Also willing to bet that we will not catch him wearing a Falcons hat!

I believe our DTs can develop. Shirley and Neblett are playing great. Perhaps we draft a Derek Wolfe, and we will be just fine there. Having two premier DEs on the defense will help all other areas on the field. You either have to double team Mario or CJ, yet if they double both, how much more will the other players be running free? Our defense would be a nightmare for opposing o-lines.

Other than the draft, there is no solid upgrade for us in the DT dept. without majorly overpaying! Maybe Garay, but we have to hope that if we draft a DT that we get really lucky. I see RR working with what he has during the offseason and getting Edwards back. We are not in position to really overpay for iffy talent! We need to pay a proven defensive playmaker and have a solid defensive draft!

Would be a huge signing, but IMO impossible to see us do.

We would have to cut/trade DWill, and restructure Smith, Gross, and Beason, or a mixture of the above.

I don't know man. On the surface it seems that way, but I have faith in Hurney to make the paperwork look right. Plus, JR is out to prove he isn't cheap and the NFL is on the verge of a HUGE TV deal that is supposedly going to increase cap room dramatically! Panther Brass will make money of Mario. Mario in Charlotte will generate the revenue that they were hoping Armanti would.....just saying.

We need as few wolfpeckers as possible on this team ;)

Just kidding I would love to have Mario opposite CJ. Not sure it will happen though.

As far as the money goes, there are going to be guys that are here right now that are not going to be here next season. There will be cuts and guys will be restructured. I am pretty sure Hurney is clever enough to make it work.

I don't see it happening though.

Cleaver or not (I am taking the latter) the player has to want to restructure for it to work. Gross, Smith, Beason, Kalil, CJ, Gamble, and DWill don't have to restructure, they will get paid here or elsewhere.

IMO there is no way to keep our "core" as they called it this off season, and make a big splash like Mario. Not saying it wouldn't be awesome, but I can't see it.

    • That makes me wonder, how many starting tackles in the NFL and/or elite tackles have short arms? I feel like there’s probably lots of tackles that end up being drafted in later rounds because they had short arms or didn’t have the physical tools.     also why not draft a tackle in the later rounds that we could move to guard or center if they fail, instead of drafting a center? If we draft a center we know they aren’t going to play tackle but if you draft a tackle they could end up playing any of the 3 positions, look at BC for example. It feels like it’s a better decision to draft a tackle in later rounds than a center.
    • Damn back to 10th. I only caught the last 5 minutes but some of those 3's were horrible lol. In that close of game you can't be launching those many hail mary's when you could be chipping away from the foul line. I guess no one wanted to get in the paint and didn't trust the refs to give them the calls maybe? Gonna watch the highlights to get a better idea of the flow of the game
    • I agree.  The Big 12 is a good conference, and he is the swinging dick in that conference.  If Bill Self retires, that sets Kansas back a bit, and Arizona moves even further ahead as the best team in that conference.  Arizona can crush west coast recruiting with USC / UCLA no longer being relevant for LA kids, and Gonzaga not being able to compete moneywise.   If Lloyd comes here, he will be second fiddle to Duke every single year in NIL and recruits.  Not to mention the entire SEC and Big East for kids who want to stay in those regions to play. This is why I keep saying go get Mark Few.  Has proven he can do more with less from an X / O perspective but can also recruit All American players and compete at a high level. He's a god at Gonzaga, but for $9M he'd make the move as that's 4x what he's making at Gonzaga, and makes him the highest paid coach in the country.
