Wide Receiver Questions

The one factor that we cannot forget is this: Cam developed chemistry with Naanee and Lafell as the year progressed. Their hands didn't suddenly get better, the timing did. Remember all of the balls Smitty dropped with Clausen at QB? JC had no timing. SS needs to know when and where the ball is going to be.

Eh, Lafell didn't need timing, he needed playing time. He was never dropping balls. That theory probably holds water with Naanee, but he still sucks. Sure, he's better than most #5 or 6 receivers out there, but I'd still be annoyed if we resigned him. Cam has too much faith in him.

Shockey was a one year band-aid that just happned to work out awesome for a year. Can't put much faith in him staying on the field and being part of what we are building......

Shockey is the best TE on this team right now. He also happens to be the one we can't rely on moving forward.

I do not feel comfortable thinking Carolina can stay put on offense and use Gettis and Barney coming back as reason to let the offense remain as is going forward.

I understand the concern... but what we add to offense takes away from the defense.. players have to step up and our GM has to continue drafting well and our coach has to continue coaching up our guys..

I do disagree on Shockey.. he is getting older, but I expected to see production from Shockey. I wasn't sure if the playcalling would allow it, but then again I was attuned to Foxball (and rather sick of it)... He averages 13 games a year and only missed, what 2 this year? I feel alright leaning on Barnidge for 2-3 games next year..

I guess the point I'm getting at is I feel your same questions will be asked for any new guys brought in here through the same light as they are being asked about Gettis, Barnidge, Shockey...

so unless we spend a good chunk of the cap on a star receiver or TE, why are we bringing in what we most likely already have?

if it ain't broke, don't break it.

we got something good with the receiving corps we have right now, WRs and TEs included.

barney will probably take brockel's place (which will be an upgrade) and well probably stay with shockey and olsen for at least next year.

at WR i could see us keeping naanee around and having him and gettis battle it out for 3rd WR and going with smitty, lafell, gettis, and naanee as the 4 WRs we predominantly use. only way we replace naanee is with a very early draft pick or if some stud WR falls to us in FA.

pilares and edwards aren't really guys i would have in the discussion for WR. i just don't see anything in either one of those guys to warrant them taking naanee's roster spot.

if we are going to upgrade at WR, lets make it a real upgrade and quit screwing around with hopeful projects.

Olsen/Shockey/Hartsock are fine...Barnidge may be on the outside looking in, but I'd love to see him stay. Barnidge was a great Drew Carter-esque-hopeful that's just not panned out yet.

Any Gronk/Graham types in college to look forward to coming out? Dwayne Allen in 2013?

I'm of the opinion that if we get an opportunity to draft a game changing WR...we do it.

Michael Floyd type size/hands/speed. Smitty's not getting any younger.

i think another WR needs to be brought in. Adams, Seyi, Edwards, and LA might not be here next year. Gettis is coming off an acl tear. the WR fa class is deep.

dont know how much longer Shockey will be here but this team should try to resign him. was on the fence being a U fan, but every team needs a guy like him.

I don't see us spending a top pick on a WR or TE. I think Offensive/Defensive Line and DB/LB are much more pressing areas.

That doesn't mean we can't find good value at the positions in later picks in the draft. Who knows though we need to find a number one to replace smitty in the next 2-3 years.

When we signed Shockey I was shaking my head and trying to see how he'd fit in with us. I shut my mouth when he saved Hartsock from choking to death and made positive comments about the future of the team. I guess I had a mental image of him that he is not fitting into...

Right now, I like him on the team. He is a Steve Smith type of guy, mentally, brash and committed to winning. He's got an edge that a team coming off a horrible season desperately needed. He's also showing that he is a good leader for the young guys - especially Olsen.

To put it shortly, I don't see any reason NOT to resign him... I think he is good for the team.
