Here's an idea...OSU's Quinn Sharp does all their kickoffs, placekicks, and punts. Although he's a junior, he's projected as high as 6th round if he comes out. He has 20 more touchbacks than the next best kicker (and that's kicking from the 30...he'd be 5 yards closer in the NFL). Ranked 2nd in nation in punting with 46+ yard average. Waive Jason Baker and Olindo Mare...draft Sharp and sign John Kasay as a FA. Sharp does kickoffs and punts....Kasay does placekicks and trains up the young grasshopper to eventually take over.

Sounds like a plan.

This is no way an indi.ctment to draft Blackmon if he fell to us but just keep in mind that we are several months out before the NFL Draft and A LOT can change between now and draft day. Remember las year when some us were actually thinking Patrick Peterson or Marcell Dareus would be the #1 pick or who would have thought that Von Miller would go #2? So fact is, as we get closer, we should know where teams stand

You've missed the point. This isn't about some sentimental love of Kasay. If you want to substitute another kicker, by all means, offer a better alternative. Or maybe you'd like to keep the status quo?! BTW that'd be Baker/Mare for a small fortune and so-so performance.

Such a plan as I laid out means you're just taking two roster spots; you're playing the strengths of a young multi-purpose kicker/punter - kickoff touchbacks, excellent punting skills, and good placekicker in his own right. Then you have the experienced high percentage veteran to serve as a mentor. The vet keeps the pressure of critical placekicks off the rookie til he's more experienced.

Dareus has been a stud in Buffalo, would have been a good pick.

Blackmon is my dream pick.

Hell, I'd mortgage another pick to land both Blackmon and Morris/Kirkpatrick

It'd probably take more than 1 more pick to land both. We could likely get Kirkpatrick with our pick (not that I'd want to, from what I've seen so far) but to get Blackmon from scratch (not using our 1st this year to move up) it'd probably take our next two 1sts to get a high 1st this year. No thanks. To move up to take Claiborne and trade enough to get Blackmon too, the cost of that is unimaginable.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
