Was Walter Payton the best running back in NFL history??

Franco Harris?

Come on. At least make your argument reasonable.

I don't know how old Mr. Touchdown is but I am farily certain he wasn't alive to even see Franco Harris play. Curious on how he comes to the conclusion that Franco Harris was better than Walter.

I never understood how anyone can say how good someone was without ever seeing someone play. I know Jim Brown was great only because of a few highlights and what I have been told. I never saw him play so I will take the word of the many people who have. I have never heard someone say Franco Harris was better than Walter but maybe he has his legit reasons for thinking so. I can't think what they may be but who knows.

Only delusional bear fans think he is the best of all time.

I may be wrong, but I'd say he played his hand here. I'm guessing he has a pre-existing dislike for the Bears, considering it is hardly just "delusional Bears fans" that feel Sweetness is the best of all time...

None of that would bother me. I could call folks that have Larry Sprinkle as their avatar a "fine young male" (very eloquent, there) and wrong about the weather 65% of the time. You should wikipedia Larry's stats!

You bite your tongue about Larry Sprinke. You just crossed the line.

I've said the I love the fact that WP was an outstanding human being...there's an award named after him, right?

He was also an outstanding football player.

The most rushing touchdowns he's ever scored in a season is 14.

Cam Newton scored that many this season.

And I also believe he was apart of the greatest team in the history of the NFL.

There comes a point when you get to a certain level where you can't say one is better than the other. Walter, Sanders, Brown are on that level. You just have to accept the fact that they are all great and arguing over who is better is an argument that is pointless because they were all the best at what they did.

And when they did it... you have a good point, and I'd take it even further by saying that the NFL has gone through many different changes that gradually decreased the defenses' freedom and increased the offenses' output. You can't compare Otto Graham to Tom Brady or Jack Ham to LT... totally different game in each era. Hell, a tackle wasn't a tackle unless you held the ball carrier down for 3 seconds back in the day. Guys could get up and KEEP GOING! Crazy.

Not to take it off topic but an outstanding human being he was not. Walter was very much an enigma who had many dark skeletons in his closet. He was a great man to some, and not so much to others. Regardless, he was great (if not the greatest) on the field.

In his Prime, Earl Campbell was the best I ever saw. But his prime didn't last very long.

Regarding td's scored, Payton played in an era in which there wasn't as much scoring. In the year that Payton scored his 14 td's, the leading scorer in the league only had 7.2 points per game. This year, 20 players are averaging more than that. In 1979, only four running backs had double figures in td's, this year there are 7.

Also, the greatest team in modern history is the undefeated Dolphins team.

I didnt see Marshall Faulk on anybodys list...

My hero as a kid...Bo Jackson

Of the RB's I've watched my rank would be Sanders, Faulk, LT, Edge, Thurman Thomas, Smith, Terrel Davis, Bettis, Watters, Martin

(Yes I am probably leaving a bunch out)

Faulk was amazing...

I think everyone loved Bo...he was the Mike Tyson of football. His dominance in Super Tecmo Bowl helped his popularity as well.

One question...why is Payton not on your list? He wasn't before your time was he?
