A month of wrenching emotion for Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin took another turn Friday when he landed the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching job.

The deal was sealed less than two weeks after Philbin’s 21-year-old son drowned in an icy Wisconsin river. The Dolphins confirmed the hiring in a news release and plan a news conference Saturday.

Philbin, who has never been a head coach, first interviewed with Miami on Jan. 7.

You mean his other kids (assuming he has more) not only lose their brother but also lose all their friends?

Yeah sounds fantastic.

From Philbin's Packers bio (written before recent events):

Philbin and his wife, Diane, live in Green Bay and have six children: sons, Matthew, 23, Michael, 20, John, 19, Kevin, 17, and Timothy, 16, and a daughter, Colleen, 10.

Any family where dad is a pro football coach pretty much has to understand and accept that relocation is a distinct possibility on an annual basis, whether it's relocation due to a promotion or relocation due to unemployment (obviously, option one is better).

Given the tragedy, I'd say a change of scenery probably is a good thing.

As I said in the NFL forum....it is likely good but very hard. Ideally, too soon to be making such a move..but just unlucky with the timing. Miami should be a good job. I wish him the best with them and wish the best for his family.
