Panthers' Cap Room + New Rule

The way I see fixing the Cap is Re-Sign Steve Smith due 7.75 mil (last year of contract), Re-Structure TD due 2.25 mil (also $8 million option bonus due 3/15), and Re-Sign/Cut Wharton due 5.7 mil (2 years left on contract). This should give enough space for Shockey and the Rookies. I believe cutting Davis would cost 5.6 mil so it should get Re-Structured. Just guessing so do correct me if I am wrong.

makes a whole lot more sense to cut him lose. he doesn't fit the offense. he doesn't have the mobility or the arm to carry out this offense. more than likely he will be nothing more than a 3rd option.

i can't for the life of me think of a good reason why a team with a up to the limit cap situation would want to keep around a 3rd string QB who didn't even get a jersey last year that will be getting a $1mil+ bonus....esp. when he doesn't fit the scheme and he'd have to have a very different playbook than the usual.

i can't for the life of me think of why clausen would want to stick around in that situation where he has no hope whatsoever of competing for a starting gig and would be lucky to get even the #2 spot....esp. when that team's fanbase (right or wrong) boo's him every time he gets his hand on the ball, even in training camp.

there is nothing that makes sense about that.

i'm not disagreeing with what your saying.

Just know this front office well enough to think jimmy will still be on the roster going into camp.

Agree with it or not....i don't.

You never did say which way you'd bet.

You are kind of right about TD. In 2012 TD is suppose to count $11 million against the cap ($8 million bonus). Cutting him before the bonus is due would then change his cap hit to the remainder of his signing bonus left($5.6 million).

However, I assume, you can still spead out the cap hit over 2 years they way you could before under the new CBA. So that changes his cap hit to $2.3 million in 2012 and $2.3 million in 2013.

So if u cut TD his cap hit goes from $11 million to $2.3 million. That is a lot and saves the Panthers almost $9 million against the cap.

Cutting players:

Mike Goodson saves $615,000; Armanti Edwards saves $412,000; and according to sport trac cutting Harstock would save $840,000....just some thoughts. Forget cutting Hartstock, but cut Goodson, Edwards, Clausen and Baker...we save 3.9 million.

Add that to at least resigning a semi backloaded Smith contract, restructuring Davis, and restructuring Wharton....we could plausibly save 11.1 million....

with those 7 moves...15 million off whatever our cap number is right now

And you still need to sign a punter and a back-up QB....remember the current cap numbers do NOT include Derek Anderson (he is an URFA).

TD's bonus that would be paid this year does NOT all count against this year's cap....it is still pro-rated.

His Cap Figure for this season is $5.9M.....pretty much the same hit as if we cut him. So, restructuring him is really the only good solution.

I agree with you opinion of clausen.

I never said i wanted the panthers to keep him.

Knowing the practices of our front office isn't rocket science.

Clausen will most likely still be on the roster come training camp.

That isn't what i would like to see, but i don't get my hopes up on something if it isn't what the FO of the panthers tend to do.

Now maybe they'll surprise me, if they do...i'd be happy to be wrong.

Don't tell me which way you'd bet.

I see ya don't feel confident with what your saying.

    • It is a tough decision.  There is another factor.  Is he in game shape?  A tired Hunt is not better than an "in-shape" Corbett.  When coming off an injury, it is natural to want to protect the injured area, even if it is completely healed.  This can cause you to contort your body for no reason, lose fundamentals, and it could lead to other injuries.  For example, I had a knee in high school that required getting taped.  That made me aware of the knee (not used to tape on my knee) and I pulled my groin (favoring or dragging the leg with the tape).  The trainer explained the groin injury the way I do here--but scared money makes no money.  If he is cleared to play, he is cleared to play.  Watch him, rotate him in for a series, etc.  Specifically, I would want to watch the matchup--who is winning more--Corbett or Hunt?  How is the defense reacting (if at all) to Hunt being in?  Etc.
    • Shannon was sued for $50 million (settled out of court, I believe) for forcing sex on his girlfriend during a two-year relationship.  He denies it, but ESPN let him go last April.  Chad Johnson's wife filed a police report because he head-butted her in a car and was put on probation. I had to google it.  I watched the Ray Rice video and when you see it, you realize just how vile and cowardly abusing a woman really is.  But for the same point Aussie tried to make, these women are defenseless, and being phyiscally bigger and stronger does not validate your actions.   I can't even stand to watch Steve Smith.  I can't normalize this kind of behavior--again, I do not think R-P had that in mind when he posted this.  When the reason was exposed, we should realize that we are talking life (quality of) and death (in some cases) here.
    • I can respect the fact that we should not glorify or normalize men who have a history of beating women.  I do not think anyone was thinking of that when they posted this, but if head-butting your wife and unconsensual sex (rape) is something you cannot overlook, I agree with that.  I think they are both half-crazed attention hounds regardless of their pasts.
