Memory Foam Allergy?

Recommended Posts

So I just dropped about $1500 on a new mattress and 2 weeks later my wife is covered in hives and rashes.

Her lips swelled up yesterday, and she looked a little like Angelina Jolie which was nice, but she complained that they were really sore so no go on the BJ there. :nono:

Anyway, she had started taking melatonin supplements right around the same time we bought the mattress so we don't know which is to blame.

She has stopped taking the melatonin and HOPING that the symtoms dissappear but no luck yet.

Anyone ever had any issues like this?

If it turns out to be the cause and I have to eat $1500 I'm gonna go ape poo in the furniture store...

Two weeks seems like a long time to develop a reaction. Are you sure there hasn't been something in the last day or two that could be causing it?

You can also call the dealer and ask them about allergic reactions to the foam. They should have all the latest info, and can tell you what, if anything, they use to reduce/prevent allergic reactions.

SEVERE side effects occur when using Melatonin:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); confusion; depression; fast heartbeat; hypothermia (fast breathing, shivering).

Looks like it's the melatonin, has she taken benadryl to try and get some of her reactions to go away?

That looks like it is the culprit.

Google tells me that a normal adult produces between 5 & 25 MICROgrams per day.

If she were in the middle of that estimate, taking a 3MILLIgram supplement means she has increased her daily amount of melatonin by 240 times!

That's per day! I think it's still gonna take a few more days for it to clear her system.

Did you get temper pedic or a knock off brand?

It's a Simmon's Beautyrest.

It has a memory foam pillow top and alot of people complain of varius issues with these things. Some say it's the fire retardant?

Memory foam is a petroleum product so I'm still on the fence about how healthy it is for us, especially after reading here.... http://www.chem-tox.com/guest/guestbook.html

You should have spent the extra $$ on a Temperpedic. They hold the paten on their foam, so everything else is a knock off. Plus they have a 20 year warranty as opposed to just a 10. And their warranty covers a 3/4 inch dip, where as every other brand covers a 1.5 inch dip.

So in other words, you could have paid $500 more and got their king size Contour series ($1999), gotten a better longer warranty, and the bed would last you a longer time. So instead of getting a new matteres every 6-8 years, you can pay more now, and have a mattress last you for 15-20 years....

We just bought one yesterday as a matter of fact! In 5 years, I have spent $1800 on two mattresses that have failed after just a couple of years.

That was the plan when we went looking, but when I started laying on the 100% foam mattresses... it felt like... I was laying on a big piece of foam.

Felt really uncomfortable for some reason.

So we got a spring/foam mattress.

Still on the fence on this one though, trying to get used to it.

    • I mean, I think you're being a little hyperbolic with the last statement, but point taken.
    • Pass rush was the biggest issue in tonight’s game, and we were tied for 28th in sacks this season. That is a major area of need that has to get addressed this offseason. I just don’t see a path where there’s a game changing QB you can bring in with where we are drafting and quality of veterans that will be available. We certainly can do better than Dalton as a backup, and should ideally have a developmental guy  (perhaps a day 3 pick this year). We have bryce for one more year on a reasonable contract and then I think 2027 is the year that you reset that position (unless he massively improves).
    • Agreed, honestly basically bringing this group back as a healthy unit would be alright.  Brady Christensen should be resigned to a very reasonable deal with him recovering from the Achilles.  Atleast we're alright at 4 of our 5 spots with Lewis, Mays, Hunt, and Moton, Nijman was decent.  While if we can snag a deal on someone, take a stab, however our resources need to go to Linebacker, Pass Rush and a real option outside Tmac (coker is amazing, but if we can get someone who isnt braindead opposite Tmac, we can fully unleash Coker AND Tmacs full potential, cant move him into the slot if racoon boy is out there licking doorknobs).
