Redskins 'Sell Their Soul' for RGIII

"The Redskins and St. Louis Rams have a deal in place for Washington to move into the No. 2 overall spot in next Month’s NFL draft. The Redskins will give up a breathtaking three first-round selections – this year’s No. 6 overall plus first-rounders in 2013 and 2014 – plus a 2nd-round pick in this year’s swap."

 3 1st round picks & your 2nd this year as well? ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

Looking back at the history of success-versus-failure of 1st Round Draft Pick Quarterbacks in the NFL, the Redskins most probably have just shot themselves in the FACE (forget the foot), etting their franchise back fr seasons to come!

Drafting up to the number 1 spot to get Andrew Luck - Ok, yeah, I would probably buy that because the guy is hyped up to be the 2nd coming of Peyton Manning. RGIII, however, is supposed to be the WHAT, 2nd coming of Michael Vick / Cam Newton, neither one having won ANYTHING yet?!

That is one deal, which is all I am saying, that I would NEVER have made. Heck, KNOWING WHAT I KNOW NOW (knowing in advance how he would perform this past season) about Cam Newton, I would have a seriously hard time making that deal for Newton in last year's draft! Going into the deal blind to what the future may hold and only being able to see what the results have been so far in the past for 1st Rnd picks, to still give up that much for RGIII takes a lot of faith in the kid...and b@lls of steel!

The Skins look desparate here and will either be seen as geniuses later or hailed as morons for a long time to come in Washington, depending on how RGIII turns out. Good luck, Hogs! :cornut:

First off - Good luck Hogs? What the hell do hogs have to do with actual Redskins? That was 30 years ago; a shitty nick name needs to leave. And also screw the "Hogs."

Seriously, you wouldn't give 2 first rounders and a 2nd to swap first round picks for Cam? Cam broke the rookie passing record from Peyton. He was the first to rush for 700 and pass for 4000. He brought the biggest overall offense jump in NFL history. He became a leader of the Panthers. He brings national attention to the Panthers. He'll bring in FA who want to win. He went to the Pro Bowl. He ignited Smitty back to form. He's a franchise QB who can take the Panthers to a SB when given experience and a good defense.

So honestly why the hell would you not trade two 1st round picks and a 2nd for someone who can remotely resemble what Cam did to Carolina?

In hindsight yes, someone would trade that for Cam, but anyone that would trade that on any unknown rookie is insane.

I think Luck and RGIII will both be fine QBs, but there is still a decent change one or both will be busts.

Not worth the risk unless they have some players they feel they can move to recoup picks in the draft the next two years.

Not having a 1st round pick for two years is giving up a lot.

Cowboys lose $10 million in cap space, Redskins lose $36 million in space. Can split it over 2012 and 2013 any way they want. More at ESPN.

And now the 'Skin are losing $36 million in cap space due to front-loaded contracts during the uncapped year.

hahahaha

I was going to post this. The Skins are below the cap a good bit, but still, they will need a few free agents. Wow. Suddenly, RGIII's situation is bleaker than Luck's--at least the Colts will have their draft picks.

1st of all, the article said 3 (THREE) 1st Round draft picks:

"three first-round selections – this year’s No. 6 overall plus first-rounders in 2013 and 2014 – plus a 2nd-round pick in this year’s swap"

...and NO, I probably would NOT trade THREE 1st round picks for RGIII, especially, as I mentioned, because of the historic performance/outcome of QBs picked up in the NFL draft.

You point out a lot of good accomplishments for Cam Newton in his very 1st year as a Panther. So how many wins, how many RINGS did that equate to last year?

Don't get me wrong, he is a talented player who is exciting to watch, but that was about it last year. Several years ago our 2 'backs set a record for most yards in NFL history for a RB tandem. That tells me every yard Cam ran for last year was an opportunity for our record-setting backs to do their jobs. THEIR job - NOT Cam's - is to run the ball. All those accomplishments remind me of Vick. He was exciting to watch, filled the seats in Atlanta...and won a total of ZERO championships. If your idea of a success is accomplishing THOSE things, then Vick was awesome.

Would filling the seats/selling tickets be worth 3 (or even 2) 1st round picks and a 2nd? If it is, 'pull the trigger' and trade them away. Bottom line, its a crap shoot, especially considering the performance numbers of QBs drafted in the 1st round. 3 1st Rnd picks and a 2nd are a little too pricey for me to gamble away...unless you are at the bottom of the NFL dogpile and are desparate...

Carolina got Cam for Nothing - no trades required. Good for us.

    • Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it. I would say maybe 9 or 10 guys would be worth a tank, pending the last 5 picks?    2025: Cam Ward (Miami (FL)) - Tennessee Titans 2024: Caleb Williams (USC) – Chicago Bears 2023: Bryce Young (Alabama) – Carolina Panthers 2022: Travon Walker (Georgia) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2021: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2020: Joe Burrow (LSU) – Cincinnati Bengals 2019: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) – Arizona Cardinals 2018: Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) – Cleveland Browns 2017: Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Cleveland Browns 2016: Jared Goff (California) – Los Angeles Rams 2015: Jameis Winston (Florida State) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014: Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) – Houston Texans 2013: Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) – Kansas City Chiefs 2012: Andrew Luck (Stanford) – Indianapolis Colts 2011: Cam Newton (Auburn) – Carolina Panthers 2010: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) – St. Louis Rams 2009: Matthew Stafford (Georgia) – Detroit Lions 2008: Jake Long (Michigan) – Miami Dolphins 2007: JaMarcus Russell (LSU) – Oakland Raiders 2006: Mario Williams (North Carolina State) – Houston Texans 2005: Alex Smith (Utah) – San Francisco 49ers 2004: Eli Manning (Mississippi) – San Diego Chargers 2003: Carson Palmer (USC) – Cincinnati Bengals 2002: David Carr (Fresno State) – Houston Texans 2001: Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) – Atlanta Falcons 2000: Courtney Brown (Penn State) – Cleveland Browns 1999: Tim Couch (Kentucky) – Cleveland Browns 1998: Peyton Manning (Tennessee) – Indianapolis Colts 1997: Orlando Pace (Ohio State) – St. Louis Rams 1996: Keyshawn Johnson (USC) – New York Jets 1995: Ki-Jana Carter (Penn State) – Cincinnati Bengals
