Tolbert To Play Fb

Recommended Posts

Fullback Mike Tolberticon-article-link.gif, who rushed for more than 1,200 yards and scored 21 times over the past two seasons, has signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Panthers.

"Mike is a very versatile player who can do a lot of different things for us," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "He plays fullback, catches the ball well out of the backfield, plays running back, and is an outstanding special teams player.

Panthers have new starting fullback. -- Mike Tolbert. Played FB at Coastal Carolina. At 5-9 & 243 lbs, not as wide as he is tall. But close.

If you're thinking Panthers don't need a fullback, Tolbert can play the H-back role that tight ends did last season. Superior receiver.

I really really really really like how he fits in our offense. I'm not even gonna address all of the RB-FB bs...it says he's a FB...so we now have a FB who's a receiver, goal line bowling ball, & special teams STUD. Murphy now has some very nice things in place for a legit ST core which is no doubt our first major fix this offseason.

Also, Chud now is most definitely in his lab concocting something very unique scheme-wise and I think we'll be surprised with what he adds to our offense now having an entire offseason with Cam. We could be a juggernaut.

He's gonna have another TE in here to compliment Olsen (whether be Barnidge or whoever) which we all know is his forte, along with Gettis returning and the rest of the crew. Get a G and some T depth and I trust Ron & Hurney with defense this draft.

We are in a very good place and I see us drafting a young defense for Rivera to build and now this offense is nearly complete.

I'm okay with Tolbert being the starting fullback this year, but the more rushers we add, whether they be RBs or FBs, they have to realize that their rushing attempts are going to go down dependent on the number of rushers we have. We can only run so many plays.

But, I think our goalline offense is absolutely unstoppable now.

I think the options we'll have out of the backfield now along with growing Gettis and Lafell as WR's... Smitty will take care of himself.. this could be a VERY VERY Exciting offense!! it's not just the addition of more running, but the addition of pass catchers as well. Can you imagine the play action plays this coming season?

He wants to be with a team on the upswing with a chance at a SB in the near future. Awesome

I think people are trying to look to far into this. We're still going to get defenders for Rivera to help propel in the draft. Tolbert is an all around ace which fits well for a team that likes using players as we do. We're getting more multi-dimensional players to suit our very unique and still developing offense.

it says he can do a lot of different things. we only used FB a handful of times a game last year. don't see how this precludes him from being used at RB, STs, ect

So he's a FB that can do a lot of different things? OK, I thought we all already agreed to that. That he's not our #2 RB is the larger point, I think.

    • That's my biggest concern with making him the 2C.  You split up the Aho Jarvis bromance that accounted for a lot of points.  If Jarvis excels as a C, it could help the team even more though.
    • The Saints being that high is the one that killed me. Chris Olave might not know his name at this point, Shaheed is coming off injury as well, so 31 year old Brandin Cooks might be your best WR...coming off a 260 yard season over 10 games. Kamara is Kamara, but didn't have 1,000 yards last year and is about to turn 30.  Toss in the fact that Taysom Hill may be the best QB on the team and I truly don't understand Barnwell's thoughts beside seeing the names "Olave" and "Kamara" and going yep, that sounds better than "Chuba" and "Thielen".
    • Now now now, I wouldn't say there is no logic, but there's just not a lot of in-depth thought put into Barnwell's  "analysis." Now to be fair to him (and other national writers), pre-season team rankings are basically clickbait. And...Barnwell, himself, said that "there's a lot of projection here." He basically admits that he doesn't know how the hell things are going to turn out with our receiver group. He also said that "I find myself" more intrigued by Coker than Legette; that does not mean that he said that fans should be, or that Coker will even be better than Legette (regardless of ESPN's per-route-run stat). So, yeah, Barnwell said some things, but even he has to basically admit that he doesn't know how bad or good that our playmakers will be in 2025.  Overall, what Barnwell is basically thinking is that the Panthers have gotten worse at the offensive skill positions, and baked into that is that others have gotten better. That's the argument in July (meaning, please don't give this any more weight than it's due). I would personally be surprised (not shocked) if we end up worse than the Titans, Pats and Giants at least. Once you throw in the Bills, Giants, Jets, Steelers, and even the Chargers, I personally think there are several teams' skill groups that may end up ranked lower than ours by the end of 2025.  @kungfoodudeis one of my dudes, but like others he is over the tipping point. He's had enough. Seeing is believing. I will say this though: Barnwell's piece is less about logic than just good ol' opinion. And to be honest, he might as well be a Huddler throwing out sh¡t in the summer based upon nothing but good feels or bad feels.  Our offense as a whole (just like any other team's) is going to depend upon the play of the O-line and especially the QB. How you can even rank the skill positions without expressly baking those two things in the cake is beyond me. I would dare say that that's not even logical.
