Gettis Feeling Super

CHARLOTTE - The first time Panthers wide receiver David Gettisicon-article-link.gif reached the end zone as an NFL player, he broke into a Superman pose.

The first time Panthers quarterback Cam Newtonicon-article-link.gif reached the end zone as an NFL player – nearly a year later – he broke into a Superman pose.

"It was a joke at first because people noticed it on the team, but I think he did it better, so I can't really complain," Gettis said."All of a sudden when he starts doing it, everybody around the world starts doing it. That's fun to see for me as a fan of the game.

"He's the quarterback. He can do whatever he wants to do. It's his team, and I'm just happy to be a part of it."

Gettis can't wait to be even more a part of it. He had to watch Newton's remarkable rookie season in street clothes, the victim of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered during training camp.

Gettis recently declared himself "93 percent" back from the injury.

"Right now, I'm just trying to get my full strength back and then just try to get the bulk back in my leg," he said. "It's clearly there, but it's a little off, so I'm still working on strength, just trying to finish out the little parts to make me 100 percent.

"My job right now is to get healthy and not be just the same player but a better player than I was before I got hurt."

Gettis showed a lot of promise as a rookie in 2010, leading a Panthers offense that struggled with three receiving touchdowns while ranking among the top NFL rookie wide receivers with 37 receptions for 508 yards.

He was battling for the starting spot opposite Steve Smithicon-article-link.gif during training camp last August when a routine play stopped him in his tracks.

"It was just a freak accident," Gettis said. "I was cutting to go one direction, got pushed, and I fell in other direction while my knee was planted.

"I got up and finished the play and didn't even think anything of it. I actually jogged back to the huddle, lined up and thought I was perfectly fine. I ran the next play, ran 10 yards and tried to cut, and it felt like my leg was about to fall apart."

Gettis said he was in disbelief when an MRI revealed that he had a torn ACL, and he struggled with the mental aspects of dealing with the first major injury of his football career.

He found support from teammates, however, and eventually found his way.

"The most difficult part of it is that I had to sit out the whole season, which I've never done, and obviously the rehabilitation was tough," Gettis said. "I felt so heartbroken that I couldn't be on the field, so I just watched games from a box. As much as you want to cheer on your teammates, your friends, and see them succeed, at the end of the day it was tough because I wanted to be out there so bad.

"Thomas Davisicon-article-link.gif was a big help going through it, and Zack Williamsicon-article-link.gif got hurt around the same time, so we became friends through that, having something in common instantly. We all pushed each other, almost like a competition that at the end of the day made us all better."

Now Gettis is close to returning to the type of competition he most craves and the opportunity to celebrate a touchdown again – with or without Superman.

"I actually wear a Superman shirt under my uniform, but that's neither here nor there - it's not mine anymore," Gettis said, putting his Clark Kent-esque glasses on. "I'll have to break something new out."

I've respected his play ever since he dropped the TD pass and came back a few playes later and redeemed himself. You could tell from his body language that he really felt bad about dropping that pass. Dude wants to push himself to be the best that he can be. So does LaFell. It will be interesting to see which one emerges as the more viable threat. Perhaps it will become a dynamic competition where they will complement each other to form a formidable duo.I am excited about them both.

This is the year for them both to bring it!

    • I truly do not understand why we rushed him back last season, we were a bad team with an already productive back in Chuba. Brooks looked like he was 60% back and clearly hadn’t regained full movement in his knee and confidence, no surprise he got reinjured. Shame on this training staff, look no further then Chuba returning too soon this season, I don’t care how bad a player wants to come back a training staff is there to protect them. Brooks is a great person and was an amazing player prior to both injuries, I hope he’s recovering well.
    • Brother thanks for sharing and all. Just for a 21 year army guy you sure over used your brain power on this interaction little too much...  Not that's Im taking a side or nothing, Ive never been a bully fan * in extreme deals bullying in needed..... I've heard from smart people in and around Panthers, Smitty needed Angie for guidance BADLY.  I've honestly thought if Smitty was born 20 years later, he should have taken a MMA path and not only would he have been a champion but a humbled good man with or without Angie helping him. He has never took off the enmoureous chip on his shoulder and it has branched off as a stick in arse over time too. Still everyone can not be or act the same with emotions, we are chemical sacks of water and bones. He reminds me of brain-washed individuals that can not turn off the switch. Plus he is high on thinking he's smarting than he is.......its a dangerous combo, but that's mainly what gave him the edge in life to live out the American dream......soooo I dare say change, but its sad at the same time. All those poor women that get involved with narcissistic disloyal men, one of the few times I agree to take what ever form them in court...
    • Completely agreed.  TBH, we have had so many great players that are in my favorite list, and I hate to narrow it down to one, but Cam is it.  Which is crazy, because you would think it would be more of the guys I grew up watching, but no.  Cam was the single most impactful player to ever out on a football uniform imo.  And like I said in an earlier post, I always felt a kinship with him in a lot of ways…  the way he was treated and judged for the off the field stuff in Florida and having to overcome all of that and fight show at back.  And although I am not a black man, I have always been welcomed by and accepted more by minorities, and thus, I know what it’s like to be judged by appearances rather than the content of your character and who you actually are.  I know what it’s like to be stereotyped and written off or mistreated for your mistakes.  I know what it’s like to be held to a different standard while your peers don’t have to meet that same standard.  So I always related to that.  And the way he came in and just electrified the whole franchise, man…  I still think about it often how much it sucks that because of how talented he was, our staff out so much on him and that ultimately cut his career short.  You’re right, there will never be another Cam…  I think Josh Allen is the closest thing we will see for a long time, but Allen is not the running threat Cam was.  Cam could run you over or around you.  That was THE absolute funnest time to watch our team ever.
