Does Poe Fit The Nose Tackle Position In A 3-4 Defense

Some think he may be too tall (6'5") to be an ideal NT

Poe is actually 6'3, and even still, that argument isn't valid. I definitely think that Poe would be absolutely ideal for the 3-4 NT or a 4-3 NT. I honestly see him comparing to Teddy Washington that played for the Patriots during their Super Bowl runs in the early 2000s.

Ted Washington: 6'5, 365lbs

Dontari Poe: 6'3, 346lbs.

But, that's not where I see the comparisons. Ted Washington wasn't a pass-rusher by any means. In this era, we've seen guys like Suh, which change our perception on what a DT should be able to do. But, Poe fits more into the Washington category. He's huge, he takes up blockers, and while he may not be able to move around the line of scrimmage as fast as some DTs, he is so massive, that there's about a 9 foot halo around him where running backs go to get tackled.

I think there's four DTs in this draft that are going to be great at the next level.

Poe, Cox, Worthy, and Brockers.

I would be happy with any one of the four. And what's definitely interesting about the group is each one is very different than the other.

Ted Washington wasn't always a 3-4 NT and he did have some decent sack numbers when he played for the Bills.

Poe is probably prototypical size but he just doesn't play to his size. He got handled fairly regularly at Memphis.

When he was at the Bills, he also lined up beside of one of the best DEs ever in Bruce Smith. So, that definitely help free him up. But, what I meant was, Ted Washington was truly a space eater. He freed up guys like Bruce Smith, just by his sheer size. And that's the type of player I see Poe being.

But Poe gets manhandled, he could be 450 pounds and still get pushed around by a smaller C or G, if he can't dominate at the college level and get knocked down, how would he do vs dominate lineman in the NFL... I remember an article about Fua last year, and he was saying he always relied on his strength to dominate his opponents, but he said everyone in the NFL is strong and have good technique, so he needed to work on his technique. What will Poe do, take a year or 2 to develop? We can't sign a #9 pick in the 1st to groom for a year or two, we need our 1st rounder to be able to play for the start, IMO

The coaches have to decide if he was man-handled at Memphis because he had no talent around him, and thus all of the focus was put on him during the offensive snaps, or if he is constantly being man-handled in one-on-one situations.

I'm assuming you don't have true scout tape, so that's a question neither you nor I can answer.

'Just say No to Poe'....is my narrow Panthers DT draft mantra.

Cox is my favorite DT &/or DE. Great inside pass rusher & can move out side to DE if needed & still be very effective; 2 for 1.

I do like Cox better than Coples even. Cox's attitude & motivation will keep him in the league a long time; Coples is a craps shoot.

    • Adios and good night, done talking about what we should have done but it’s weird when anti-tankers try and get back on the high horse.
    • Yes. Fitt said he liked Young for two years. He hitched his wagon to him. Reich and Young were going 2-15, nothing I said we should get would have saved him. A new coach plus Tepper (and Morgan) would have wanted the draft assets we kept or got to be used by a better GM/Coach. SMH, you need to read my post and your own again. You said: “So we should have sold off all of our talent and what?” I was being sarcastic that they still were in the roster because the guys you are saying we shouldn’t have sold off got sold off anyway but instead of getting full value, we got scraps. We had an opportunity to sell at the highs and instead we let the stocks lose 50-75% and then sold them. Because we didn’t tank in 2022 when the Rams basically handed the idea to us, we either set the team back several years to where we won’t do anything and will be back at the drawing board or kept enough talent off the team that we may make the playoffs but we still won’t be a top team like an extra handful of 1st rounders could have gotten us.
    • Holy poo... we have allowed the fewest goals in the playoffs, total. Including the teams that lost in the first round... lmao
