Sports Blog By Panther Fan...

Recommended Posts

I use the term FAN loosely, because after reading this I sincerely have my doubts. Even if he did try to soften that by saying he's a PSL owner and all that. While it was very well written, I get the vibe that this person is nit-picking at any little thing. Almost grasping for straws so to speak..

I don't know who wrote this article but I stumbled upon it today.

My biggest concern right now is our starting quarterback, Cam Newton. Newton has only played in the NFL for one season but he has had a huge impact. He has set numerous records including: most passing yards for a rookie, most total touchdowns for a rookie, most passing yards in one game for a rookie, most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season, along with many other records. So was the rookie season a success for Mr. Newton? Yes. Was the rookie season a success for the Panthers? Not quite. The team went 6-10 and looked bad for most of the season. The team won 4 of the last 6 games but none of the games were competitive. The best win of the season was in week 15 when the Panthers beat the Texans (a team who had already clinched a playoff spot and rested most of their starters). The other 3 wins came against the Colts (1-15) and the Buccaneers (4-12). At the end of the season I was not satisfied with the results. My team had a "strong" finish to a mediocre season.

Perspective is a wonderful thing right? I was satisfied that they turned it around and didn't end up with a top 3 pick..

In the Pro Bowl I think Cam Newton embarrassed himself. In a game where the corners can't press the receivers, blitzes can't be called, and there is no intentional grounding, Cam Newton managed to throw 3 interceptions and get sacked twice. Now I know the Pro Bowl is meant to be fun but his performance was dreadful. As a rookie, you need to pay your dues to the league. You need to work hard to show your peers that you are serious about being a Pro Bowl player. Andy Dalton, also a rookie, took his role seriously. He went 7-9 with 2 touchdowns. Eric Weddle, another first-time Pro Bowler, played his heart out. He didn't go out and treat the Pro Bowl as a joke; he went out to prove himself to his peers. Newton, on the other hand, seemed content to play for fun and take this experience for granted. Newton should have made the most out of this experience especially under the circumstances. He was a replacement for Eli Manning who couldn't participate since his team was playing in the Superbowl. Cam Newton was lucky to escape with only 3 interceptions. Many of his passes were not accurate and the defense had their hands on the ball before the receivers did. Newton was not prepared for the Pro Bowl. He was hoping to use this as a platform to prove how great he was but instead he made a fool of himself. If Newton makes it to the Pro Bowl again, I certainly hope he takes it seriously (and tucks in his shirt). I have come to two conclusions based off his Pro Bowl play. Either Cam Newton thinks he has already "made it" in the NFL and has nothing to prove or Cam Newton isn't good enough to play with the best players in the NFL. (I find this unacceptable. Where is the intensity or your competitive side?)

...wow. The pro bowl is the be all end all of your career apparently.

Right now, I am not sold that Cam Newton is a great quarterback. His passing yardage and rushing numbers were good during his rookie season so maybe he should be used as a running back who can throw or even a tight-end. I am concerned that the fans in Carolina are willing to sit through 6-10 seasons as long as they have an exciting quarterback to watch. I am concerned that Newton will not respond well if things do not go his way. I am concerned about the future of my team. I know this is not the popular opinion right now but there is an argument to be made. You can't only look at the good in a player and refuse to see their faults. Good stats aren't the only thing that matter (Look at Lebron James. ZING!). I think there is a spot for Cam Newton on this team but I do not think it is at quarterback.

That last sentence baffles me. Who else would you want to play QB? I'm trying to understand his logic, but I just cannot. Clausen? Anderson? Armanti? lol wut?!

I got through the 1st paragraph thinking okay he is on to something making until he started discrediting our last 6 games, but Texans were still playing for a high seed, and that same TJ Yates had won them some games before we beat them, and they didn't rest their starters for that game, Colts started playing harder (especially the DEF) around the time we played them, even thought their offense reminder me of ours in 2010, only team that really just got rolled on was the Bucs, and we went in limping vs the Saints*.

The Pro Bowl was food to feed the trolls, Cam played horrible, but he had a couple of Saints* Olinr blocking half ass for him, while the AFC team was trying to go full team, Cam watched Rodgers and Brees with 5 minutes to throw the ball, but then when he stepped in he had pressure before he even received the snap,

Cam not being our QB, we should shot this man.

And yet...absolutely no mention of the defense.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding!

He's willing to blame Cam for the 6-10 record, but no mention of the defense that was bad unfortunately. Injury plagued and all. No mention.

Newton has received an unprecedented amount of hype through his rookie season. In my opinion, it is not warranted. Let's do a blind test. Quarterback #1 threw for 3,398 yards, completed 58% of their passes, threw 20 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, was sacked 24 times, led their team to a 9-7 record and made the playoffs. Quarterback #2 threw for 4,051 yards, completed 60% of their passes, threw 21 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, was sacked 35 times, led their team to a 6-10 record and did not make the playoffs. Which quarterback would you rather have on your team? Quarterback #1 is rookie Andy Dalton and quarterback #2 is Cam Newton.

Another example of not fully researching or mentioning all the variables. The Bengals Defense was amazing. What would our Record look like if it had a defense like the Bengals last year?

@SetfreexX, GTFO if you don't want to read this. No one forced you to.

This is PFFL's blog. For anyone new, he was the scourge of this board last year. After his 30th alt was banned, he went to the Broncos' board to try to sell the idea that The Golden Calf of Bristol was a much better QB than Cam.

I think most of us here came to the conclusion that the guy has some "issues".

    • I think his stats will depend on the development of the rookies and sophomore receivers, which isn't totally under is control. The eye test is a different story. Has to consistently look the part before you decide to pay him Purdy money.
    • Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it. I would say maybe 9 or 10 guys would be worth a tank, pending the last 5 picks?    2025: Cam Ward (Miami (FL)) - Tennessee Titans 2024: Caleb Williams (USC) – Chicago Bears 2023: Bryce Young (Alabama) – Carolina Panthers 2022: Travon Walker (Georgia) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2021: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2020: Joe Burrow (LSU) – Cincinnati Bengals 2019: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) – Arizona Cardinals 2018: Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) – Cleveland Browns 2017: Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Cleveland Browns 2016: Jared Goff (California) – Los Angeles Rams 2015: Jameis Winston (Florida State) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014: Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) – Houston Texans 2013: Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) – Kansas City Chiefs 2012: Andrew Luck (Stanford) – Indianapolis Colts 2011: Cam Newton (Auburn) – Carolina Panthers 2010: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) – St. Louis Rams 2009: Matthew Stafford (Georgia) – Detroit Lions 2008: Jake Long (Michigan) – Miami Dolphins 2007: JaMarcus Russell (LSU) – Oakland Raiders 2006: Mario Williams (North Carolina State) – Houston Texans 2005: Alex Smith (Utah) – San Francisco 49ers 2004: Eli Manning (Mississippi) – San Diego Chargers 2003: Carson Palmer (USC) – Cincinnati Bengals 2002: David Carr (Fresno State) – Houston Texans 2001: Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) – Atlanta Falcons 2000: Courtney Brown (Penn State) – Cleveland Browns 1999: Tim Couch (Kentucky) – Cleveland Browns 1998: Peyton Manning (Tennessee) – Indianapolis Colts 1997: Orlando Pace (Ohio State) – St. Louis Rams 1996: Keyshawn Johnson (USC) – New York Jets 1995: Ki-Jana Carter (Penn State) – Cincinnati Bengals
