John Clayton's Top Ten Breakout Players for 2012 (A Panther makes the list)

Recommended Posts

John Clayton recently compiled a list of the top ten break out players for 2012 and the list includes a former Tar Heel, a wide receiver from a division rival, and one of the Panthers own.

1. Julio Jones, WR, Atlanta Falcons

2. A.J. Green, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

3. Patrick Peterson, CB, Arizona Cardinals

4. Dez Bryant, WR, Dallas Cowboys

5. Ryan Williams, RB, Arizona Cardinals

6. Robert Quinn, DE, St. Louis Rams

7. Greg Olsen, TE, Carolina Panthers

8. Tyron Smith, OT, Dallas Cowboys

9. Connor Barwin, LB, Houston Texans

10 a. Russell Okung, OT, Seattle Seahawks

10 b. Trent Williams, OT, Washington Redskins

John Clayton on Greg Olsen

Cam Newton has been working on his short and intermediate routes and should take advantage of Olsen's pass-catching ability in the middle of the field. Given the leaguewide trend toward getting the ball to tight ends, Olsen should have a career year.

Note: Both the Cardinals and Cowboys have two players on the list.

So what do you guys think Greg Olsen's stats will be this year?

700 yds 7 tds

Very good estimate. Olsen pretty much consistent for 5 tds every season so far, but in this offense I say 7 is the low with 10 tds being tops. I'm good either way, no team in this league forgets to game plan around him especially in Chuds O-scheme.

This offense is lookin ridic on paper and people still sleepin on us I LOVE IT.

This list isn't that great as it's full of players that have already had good seasons. I do agree Greg is due for a breakout season though.

As far as our best breakout player though, I think Jody Breeze is gonna straight supernova.

    • This guy pre-draft was saying he could take or leave football, and he seems to have been playing with that mentality ever since lol.
    • Agreed, another safety would be nice. Bud Clark, TCU, is one I would like to see us take a flyer on later in the draft, if he stays healthy and we don't take someone earlier. I just really hope we draft a solid C this year. Tired of seeing us cycle through average to below average players in that area.
    • Bryce doesn't like throwing into the middle of the field unless the play broke down or it's set up to give him a passing lane.  So because of this issue, most of the passing offense has to be outside the numbers towards the boundary. So you see him throw a lot of dump offs, swing routes, short side out routes, comebacks or deep balls outside the numbers using the boundary as protection of an interception.    Pretty easy for a NFL defense to see this and scheme against it.  All you have to do is run a shell cover 2 deep dime, LB plays a hook underneath, take the flat away with a blitz/flat zone option for the two inside DB's, outside two DB's play hook zone underneath and carry anything deep.    Pretty much what NO ran to take away Rico while also limiting What Bryce can do as well.
