Griffin vs Newton

So RG3 has expressed that he doesn't want to be known as an "option quarterback" (link) which brings up a discussion that's been had on here numerous times, and generally leads to people saying stupid things.

Rehashing that discussion doesn't really interest me much. What does interest me about this particular item from the unmentionable site is this sentence from Michael David Smith.

There’s never been an athlete quite like Griffin — a hurdler good enough that he could have been an Olympian if he hadn’t turned his attention to football — at the quarterback position.

Now, Newton and Griffin don't quite have the same athletic profile (Griffin is 3 inches shorter and 30 pounds lighter) but I'm wondering what Panther fans have to say about Smith's proclamation that there's "never been an athlete quite like Griffin". Especially as it pertains to our own quarterback.

Sorry, I just don't see the correlation. All he is saying is that RG3 could have been an Olympic hurdler. I haven't heard that about Cam or any other QB. No one has credibly compared RG3 (or any other QB for that matter) to Cam Newton since Newton showed his athletic prowess last year. A QB who is Cam's size, that has the strength of a player 30lbs heavier, but who also has the dexterity and agility of a guy 30 lbs lighter---who can actually throw the ball----is at the very least rare (if not unique), and has never been seen in the NFL.

he will be what vick was supoosed to be

That's actually pretty close to my take. Griffin is what Vick would have been if he had a working brain.

Waiting to see how he'll be as a passer though. My gut says he'll be better than Vick. Not ready to buy he'll be as good in that department as Newton is though.

Ya know, Cam Newton jumped off the Empire State Building this one time and he only sprained his ankle.

He has the strength of a herd of bears with the speed of a Cheetah, the stamina of an African wild dog and the mind of a damned scientist.

and Cam will be what Vince Young and Mcnabb were suppose to be.. but better

Newton's a better passer than either one.

Have said it before, but will say again. As far as QB prototypes, Newton bears far more similarity to Brett Favre or John Elway (big, athletic, not super accurate but near-perfect in spots and generally accurate enough to get the job done) than he does Vick, Young or McNabb.

    • His durability was like the last negative I would look to in size related critique. Uh, evaluating him.   There have been plenty of small/short players at other positions that were tough as hell. RB, WR, some DBs and returners.  And how tall was Sam Mills?  His height, we know restricts his vision. His size inhibits ball security. Big time. I mean that could be attributed more to his lack of strength but it comes under size I suppose.  I get that throwers don’t want that upper body too bulked and tightened up but he should have been building his base it doesn’t appear that he has done much.
    • The post may be classless but the play wasn't.  Jets have nothing else to hype and probably didn't make the connection to the injury before posting
    • He helped keep the pats from having a perfect season. He should get in for doing every NFL fan that favor. lol
