Called Cam a top 5 QB.

Thinks he can avoid the slump easily. That he's grasped the game as fast as anyone. Said he's a 'throw first' QB. That he proved a lot of people wrong.

Although he says he's ready and the other year he was getting his legs under him. He said also that the team he goes to has to be the right fit. He believes that the Panthers would be the best fit. Saying that you can't get a better situation that there is in Carolina. Steve smith, Olsen, who are they going to double?

Mac Attack 6/18/12: Free agent WR Plaxico Burress stops by and tells the guys he would love to sign with the Panthers and has a lot of respect for Cam Newton and Steve Smith.

Plaxico Burress on Mac Attack June 19

Burress had no problem telling us what an awesome fit the Carolina Panthers would be for him. From a personal standpoint and a professional standpoint, he made it obvious that Carolina was his number one pick.

“There’s no doubt about it. I’m a Virginia Beach guy, born and raised. My brothers live there in Charlotte, my cousins live there in Charlotte…and all my family is down in Columbia, SC, so that would just be a great situation all the way around…Not just that, but playing with Cam who I think is one of the top five quarterbacks in all of football. And I’ve been saying for as long as I can remember that Steve Smith has been one of my favorite receivers as long as I can remember. I just think it’s a great situation.”

Since Burress has so much respect for Cam, we asked him what he would say to those who speculate a sophomore slump for Newton.

“He grasped the game just as fast as anybody that I’ve seen come in and play the quarterback position in the NFL and do it at such a high level… For him to come in as a rookie and just light it up and have some of those grown men looking like children, I just think it says a lot about him as a player and as a quarterback.”

We asked Burress why he hadn’t seen interest from other teams. According to him, it’s simply because he is being very particular about the type of environment he wants to play in.

“I just want to put myself in a position to go out and have success and to make the guys around me better and obviously play with a quarterback who can really play the position. It’s just about me picking my spots and seeing where I’m a good fit. You just look at a situation like Carolina. You can’t come across a better situation than that. “

Some Carolina fans have expressed fears that bringing Burress in as a receiver could throw off the chemistry that seemed to come along last season. Burress assured us that wouldn’t be an issue for a guy like him.

“You can ask any of the guys that I’ve ever played with about being a guy in the locker room that everyone likes and treating everybody the same. That’s who I am. But, for the people who say those things, maybe they don’t know me.”

The guy has a point. I don't know though.

He knows the position and is ready to come in and block for the RB's and run routes on day one. He's a proven Veteran people. "Are we here to win a SB or win a beauty contest?" (pie to the person who can name who that quote came from" (hint, he's on our team)

To anybody that doesn't want him... Cam had a tendency to sail balls last year. I can't think of a better target to catch those balls. I think that the FO has to look at this from a football standpoint. What are this teams goals? What can we afford to pay him? Can he legitimately help this team reach our goal?

Once they do that, (and maybe they already have) then we'll know how serious we are to winning it all this year, which I think is possible.

I'll tell you this... I'd rather have him than get Shockey back! And I'm a huge "U" homer

Actually I think he would be a great fit, if he would take an incentive laden contract, I think he could offer a real red zone attack and cause match-up problems for a lot of corners in the division.

This. Add him and we may never need to settle for 3 again.

Hell yah. How many more weapons can we add to this exciting offense of ours. We brought in Tolbert and if we could get Burress, wow!

We need to add a sure guy like him who we can depend on other than Smitty. Lafell and Gettis are so so. Especially with the other three teams in our division having great depth at CBs, a guy like Burress should help our wrs and Cam.

    • Smith-Wade for me. He has the path to some decent hefty snaps in Evero’s scheme. He held his own last year and improved as he continued to get snaps— If he makes some strides, could be a very capable nickel.  I agree with Sanders. Bryce had some trust in him that final Falcons game post crazy head-stand.  Bryce looked for him a lot that final game and made some critical catches to get us the W. Seems he’s put in major work so I’m hopeful about him.  Wallace will have an offseason under his belt. I like him a lot, was higher graded than most remember in his draft (I.e Brugler had him LB3/70 overall) but he isn’t as cerebral of an LB as we’re used to. I think he could thrive if we get D captain/film-junky type next to him— because right now that’s Jewell.  Still a bit cautious but love the talent. Rozeboom may snag some playing time from him if he’s still working out the kinks.
    • Didnt Canales already say starters are playing in the pre season? either way extra reps dont hurt but im not one of those people that think playing in the pre season would have saved Bryce from an awful start.
    • very helpful.  I read back in this thread where they might try Jarvis at C--I thought he and Aho had good chemistry, however.  Nonetheless, he could expand his value there, and now we have a guy who can play jarvis' spot.  Freddie is a pro, no doubt--and as little as I know about the inner workings of strategy and positions, I could tell Burns was burning us at times.  I figured he'd retire and I was looking forward to it.  FWIW, they have Jarvis listed as a C on the 2025-26 roster.
