theists address it theologically as being a miracle. life exists because god knits together individuals in the womb. there is no other explanation needed; if you subscribe to the idea that the bible is the inspired word of god and therefore infallible and therefore beyond questioning, there is no need to ask further questions. life exists because god made it exist. period.

atheists call this reasoning (or lack thereof) into question, invoking the "god of the gaps" process to describe the position of theists who, unable to explain something by empirical means, simply say "god did it" and accept that as a satisfactory answer. theists and naturalists/scientists, sadly, seem to be mutually exclusive forces in these sorts of debates; the naturalists' position (and, therefore, the atheist that the article mentioned) is one of observing the development of life over time and seeking to understand the mechanism by which it exists. scientific exploration has lent much insight into how life is conceived; while the specifics the question asks may not be known, it is a mistake to lump "we don't know" with "we aren't addressing it."

in truth the answer is likely to be a philosophical one, as the empirical why is never the same as the philosophical one that we all seem to be striving for anyway, and the fact that any singular discovery in science will always be followed by another "why."

i don't think "I" was anywhere... My particles have been floating around for several billion years... but me?

I just got here and I won't be staying too long.

these things aren't really addressed because the conscious can't really comprehend a lack of consciousness.

This...

From the aether we come, so to the aether we shall return...
