SB Nation's Safety Rankings (Panthers 30th)

Recommended Posts

thanks for proving my point.

Minter was a damn good starting free safety. He was never great in coverage, but he was a big hitter and a SURE TACKLER. Godfrey is statistically one of the worst tacklers in the NFL.

They aren't comparable players.

The biggest point you made was that you were talking out of your ass, proven by the fact you didn't even know how to spell Mike Minter's name.

The Panthers have NEVER had any great safeties.

The best that we've had, has always been overrated by Panther fans.

Our current talent at the position isn't that much different than the best we've had, but it's all how ya look at it.

Damned! Wrong click again, free pie for you..

So for you Mike Minter was an average to under average safety?

spelling error doesn't mean anything. the fact you want to bang yiur drum on it is laughable.

Minter often went for the big hit, rather than the sure tackle. i said this already, but you don't want to remember it that way.

Love Minter. He was the best safety the Panthers have had. He was an above average safety that went for the big hit insteas of the sure tackle.

He was never elite. He was underrated outside of the Carolinas, and overrated by most Panther fans.

Their stats have already been compared in an early off season thread.

Their play and stats a very similiar.

The thing Minter had over Godfrey, was he was one of the defense's vocal leader.

The thing to look at in my opinion is that the safety position has become more important in today's NFL with the different styles of offenses around the league. You need to have that guy with the ability to cover multiple types of receivers and additionally be strong and aware enough to support the run game. Our issue is that we've continuously been a team with the hard hitters without much ballhawking skills. Minter sometimes, McCree (especially), Harris, Godfrey rely heavily on positioning for the big hit and when they are wrong look completely lost and get everyone's panties in a wad. The deal with a guy like Minter is that he did have more cover ability than the rest but was overall an above average player with great leadership skills. I think McCree screwed up everyone's perspective on a good safety more than anyone....he pissed me off

I think the debate over Minter is useless. That was several years ago and the skill set teams are looking for have changed.I will say the position has been overlooked by the Panthers in my opinion.

Minter played the bulk of his career before the rule changes. Being a thumper at S was more ideal. So do to the era he played....he was better than a Godfrey. Open field tackling and coverage are huge for a S in today's game.....

This is ridiculous. There is no way the Bucs can be better than us when one of their safeties has yet to put on an NFL jersey. I'm not saying our safeties are great, but how are the Bucs better than ours?

    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
