Football Gameplan's 2012 Wk 2 Panthers vs Saints* Preview

understandable and reasonable...but i wouldn't say that the bucs had success running against us last week. 3.6 ypa and 130 yards with no TDs isn't what i call success. they didn't really do anything well on offense. they won because the carolina offense couldn't get going and i don't know that the Saints* D will be able to do to the panthers what the bucs did. the Saints* just don't have the discipline needed on either side of the ball, really, with payton gone.

if it comes down to leadership, discipline, and focus, panthers are going to win. they are much more likely to be able to pull it together than the Saints*.

The Bucs running allowed them to control the clock..and that's essentially what you look for when you run the ball.

I don't trust the Saints* defense at all.. this could end up being a shoot out in all honesty. They are allergic to stopping the run

their defense and the fact that the panthers couldn't stay on the field had more to do with that. all they did with the ball is not drop it.

agreed about the Saints** D, tho. very well could be a shoot out...unless the panthers D from last week shows up. i think they can handle what the Saints** showed on the field last sunday. the panthers problems with their offense is easier fixed than the Saints* problems on defense.

So he says TE's are equal and nobody's up in arms?

Equal in the sense that there isn't a liability there.. That's how I rank the positions by identifying the liabilities.. Which is why last week everyone was up in arms about being equal at QB with the Bucs.. Wasn't saying Freeman is better than Cam, just pointing out the Bucs didn't have Chris Chandler at QB

The one thing that scares me- Jimmy Graham. How do we game plan for him? Keek + big nickel help? I wouldn't mind seeing Martin, Haruki, and Godfrey lined up on a few plays. Graham is really the X-factor here. Fortunately for us, Brees is not gelling 100% yet with this WR core yet. I heard chico the other day on sirius nfl radio, and he was talking about gearing up for the Saints*. Pat Kirwan mentioned a previous game a couple years back of a team coming out of the gates slow (with high expectations), and then captured the second win against a good team (can't remember who). Rivera said he remembers watching that game- "that game gives us hope." Kirwan and Tim Ryan were caught off guard big time. What head coach needs HOPE to win the second game of the season. I love Rivera so far, but that scared me! Can't wait til Sunday.

Theres more of a liability on our defense to contain Graham than their is for them to contain Olsen.

Also, Receivers I actually think we have them beat

Smith, Lafell,Muprhy> Colston, Moore, Henderson.

People seem to forget that Murphy was the #1 in Oakland until he got hurt/started bitching about them benching Jason Campbell losing his job to Palmer.

Murphy's good receiver and has proven such so far with us. Lafell is super clutch and really starting to come into his own now that he's got a QB and grasp the playbook. Then of course Steve Smith is Steve Smith.

Our top 3 "WR'S" just based off one week caught 61% of the passes thrown at them for 234 yards and only 1 drop over 21 targets.

Their top 3 "WR'S" week one only caught 50% of the passes thrown at them for 202 yards and had 3 drops over 22 targets.

You also mentioned Gamble and Colston being a good matchup to watch, which I agree with but it seems to me N.O likes to put him in the slot a lot and Gamble stays on the outside every down, so I don't know how much we will those 2 face off. If and when they do, I have full confidence in Gamble containing him at the very least.

All that being said it will be very interesting to see what happens this week, as the biggest similarity in each of our losses last week was be both got dominated on the time of possesion. Washington had the ball just under 19 minutes longer than the Saints* and the Bucs held onto it almost a full 15 minutes longer than us. On top of that we both lost the turnover battle 0-2 in favor of our opponents. And the final similar aspect which you did mention was how we both abadoned the run game quickly, they only gave their backs 10 carries, and us 7.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
