Peter King: Torrey Smith Should Teach Cam Newton Life Lessons 101

It amazes me that Schefter or anyone else would say this is a "great quote."

Do any of them realize how insulting that is towards Torrey Smith? His brother just died. That's not something you hope for. That's not something one hopes to encounter in order to have a "learning experience" or "life lesson." And Smith chose to play last night because that's how he felt best to deal with it. What does that have to do with football or changing Cam's perceived attitude?

I'm just dumbfounded at how much hate there is bubbling under the surface for Cam. These guys have been waiting for a chance to hate. Every Under Armour commercial. Every Gatorade commercial. They can't stand it. It was like being their parents and having to watch a black child enter into their segregated school for the first time - EVERY TIME they saw Cam on TV.

King should retire. To use Torrey Smith's family tragedy as an opportunity to belittle another is just beyond fathomable... And not just any other person - but a guy who denied him an interview last year based off of his previous comments about him.

Peter Queen, you are a b*tch and I am disgusted with you. Again, it's not even about babying our QB. It's just that disturbing to me that they'd even bring up Smith's situation in such a "ho-hum" manner. "Hey, this guy's brother died yesterday... What an awesome life lesson! This is a teaching moment for that other colored fellow I had a problem with last year!"

Go baste your turkey neck, fatty.

Dude go read some of the tweets getting sent to Schef and King regarding that comment. Wow. Glad to see people thinking that was classless, too.

Both of those guys lost some respect from me after this. Not that it matters to them though.

And btw, I hope everyone took note of not just one person but the ENTIRE Ravens team on the sidelines last night. The coaches, players, everyone engaging and interacting...looking at the playbooks (Reed & Lewis especially) trying to figure out how to adjust mid-game. Actively communicating with each other and trying to understand what New England was changing and doing on their side of things. Its lightyears beyond where we are atm as a TEAM.

You are correct. And in my opinion, it starts with Ron.

I'm sure someone will twist what you said to imply that because Newton didn't act like Flacco last night, it is an example of his shortcomings. They need to remember that Cam didn't look dejected until we were down like 33-7 and it was late in the 4th quarter. Show me an example of a losing QB in that situation actively engaged with his teammates, then we can talk.

Great, great post. Would give double pie if I could.

Peter King should be hanging his head in shame.

I can only imagine what its like for Cam. I get pissed off to the point where ill lose sleep if i lose a few matches of Gears of War. I despise losing. No telling how id act if i were paid to play a sport and had the eyes of an entire nation watching me.

this thread has taken the level of homerism around here to a new level. I don't think King is comparing the two situations. I think Peter is saying Cam doesn't need to say the team is an embarrassment and act like a child because we got blown out in Week 3 by the defending Super Bowl Champs.

And I totally agree. He's 23, I get it, and I'm not worried by it. But he needs to grow up. Right now he is not acting like a leader. There's a reason he didn't get the C and this may have to do with it.

Like it or not, he might be the most intelligent sports writer covering the NFL...if not any sport. There are more football knowledgeable people out there, but he is very good at what he does and I always appreciate his opinion, negative or positive.

I should add...saying be a leader and a grown up isn't the same thing as accepting losing. Cam needs to learn how to do the first.

Cam Newton didnt lie. The team IS an embarassment and as a Carolina Panther fan I am ashamed.

King knew exactly what is he doing, he knows who his audience is. If he wanted to chastise Newton's behavior he could've did so without using Torrey Smith's deceased brother to do so. That is disgusting and shows you the fake soapbox his type is willing to stand on.

Cam doesn't have the C because we already have Jordan Gross and Steve Smith who are veterans of the NFL. They've been to the big game while Cam is just in his second year. They know what it's like to have great quarterback play (Delhomme 2008), horrible quarterback play (Delhomme... End of 2008); they can handle adversity. Cam has only known one thing: winning. It's hard to be a winner all your life and thrown into a 2-14 team.

You're right though, he's not acting like a leader. But had we won, no one would be questioning his leadership right now. It's all about context in the NFL. What's hot, and what's not. Cam's questionable leadership and passion is what is hot so that's what ESPN and NFL.com are focusing on. He's a second year quarterback coming from the best rookie QB campaign ever. There should be some expected criticism on his behalf.
