Grantland: Punting on 4th-and-1 candidate for worst coaching move of the year

I don't know if it was the right call, wrong call or the worst call. All I do know is, it is a lot easier to be a coward and say something behind a computer screen when you have nothing to lose or not have to answer any questions afterwards.

Had I been at the game I would have yelled at Rivera to go for it then, but alas all I could do was yell at my TV then make "cowardly" posts about Rivera's bad coaching

you and me both. difference is, we are measly fans who can yell anything about anything with no repercussions. i wanted us to go for it too and was yelling, but as a fan, we don't have pressure to deal with. but again, cam doesn't fumble we don't have this discussion.

hey guys i have a great idea

let's go for it on 4th and 1 when we could easily get stopped AND we're in atlanta AND we're facing a red-hot offense who would easily win if they get the ball at midfield AND...

or we can try to give them, at worst, 80 yards which isn't a guaranteed victory. oh even better, 99 yards!!!

i'm sure whatever dumb bullshit computer program that grantland runs would say that the chances of winning when you have to drive 99 yards in 60 seconds with 0 timeouts is miniscule. we win that game 9 times out of 10. we probably fail that short run 9 times out of 10. i mean, you people keep bitching about our run playcalls anyway. it hasn't been as effective as it was last year. it is totally different from last season, where no matter what, we were getting the first down.

absolutely the right playcall in this situation. if we were playing a shitty offense i could understand. like the jags or something. but the falcons? are you fuging insane? give them 50 yards when we could give them 80-99? no.

anyway, then haruki nakamura and josh norman fuged up for 2 or 3 plays. this game isn't on rivera or mcdermott or chud. we probably wouldn't have been in the fuging game with any other coaching staff (i mean, this *is* the only close game atlanta has even had).

shut up about it already. jesus.

Yeah. Considering how well we'd contained Ryan, White and Turner, I know I was pretty confident giving the ball back to them and relying on a pretty good defense to stop them.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I know I was completely blown away when Ryan attacked Nakamura and Norman for a huge gain. I hadn't seen the Falcons try to expose that matchup yet and it took me completely by surprise.

Good coaching decision.

Either way, our defense is so bad it's just not even funny. They do nothing right. The coaching is bad. The scheme is bad. They can't cause turnovers. They can't cover. They can't tackle. They can't swat down passes. They can't stop the run. There is not a single redeeming quality for our defensive unit.

why do people keep saying the needed 99 yards

they only needed a FG, not a TD

was I watching a different game or tripping on shrooms and not know it?

No you are right and I'm retarded for saying 99 yards. But our defense is still the worst to ever take the field in history. At any level of the sport of football.

Meh, going a lil overboard

Put Martin back and I kind of agree on Beast... time to put Luke in the middle

Gamble wasnt picked on, Norman was and had a few good plays, a few bad ones

And of course our pass rush stalled a few of their drives

It's not only the 4th and 1...it was the horried clock managemnet at the end of the 1st half (which still is bleeding over from last season....clock management....)

I knew McFail sucked, Chud is ambititous in his play calling, but now...I am about to board the yea... RR sucks as a head coach train.

    • In a lot of ways it makes sense to just draft a tackle early so they have flexibility with icky's injury and Motons not getting younger. I'd love for them to resign BC cause to me he looks pretty good anywhere they put him
    • Rods the one who needs to go if they don't win a cup soon, Overall I like the way Tulsky operates, do i wish he had pivoted to several smaller moves instead of going all in on a big acquisition? Obviously.   But RBA is the one I'm locked onto, he is too stuck in his ways and if if "his way" can't get somthing done he just triples down and proves his insanity by trying the same stupid crap over and over, the facebook casuals will be like but but but 8 years in a row making the playoffs.... yes we'll guess what we should have at least a cup to show for it, yes only one team wins every year but this year will be the 8th consecutive year making the playoffs.... heck none of us even get excited about that and haven't in four years minimum.  Our top guys are nearing the peak of their prime the time is now, but the canes seem content to stand pat and "make the playoffs" anther 5-8 years in a row.
    • #Panthers TE Tommy Tremble has a $2 million guarantee that is triggered today at 4 p.m. I don’t expect any movement there, fwiw. Tremble is due a $3.67 million base salary this season. He has another $2.4 million in incentives on his deal, per Over the Cap. https://x.com/mike_e_kaye/status/2032117015121391697?s=46&t=xeIgh_-Vr2aKxBkBJdfnKA
