our D has sucked... but i dont know if its mainly the players being so bad, or mcdermotts scheme being so bad, or the overwhelming combination of the two

worst tackling team in the league= carolina panthers. thats doesn't exactly scream good coaching

People love to bash him.....and did love to praise Chud.

McD is showing adjustments post NYG fiasco. He is calling some decent games. Getting some good production. His D looks to be taking some positive steps. You aren't seeing repetitive status quo. If something blows up on him one week....he is working to fix it.

There were no players last year for him to really survive last year. I think he is showing adjustments week to week this season. Outside of the NYG game....the D has showed up more so than the offense. Guy should get a little credit. He isn't pulling a Chud each week.

i agree...since the giants massacre, mcdermott has gotten the most of our D.....I just hope we leave keek @ mlb for good

I come down on it being the players mostly, though it's pretty clear the fundamentals (read: tackling) are not what they ought to be. And I'd add that the practice of sitting Kuechly on passing downs was folly.

That said, if our offense was even half as good as they were last year, having a defense hold an opponent to sixteen points should be enough.

Should be... :(

I think on D our problem is primarily a lack of talent - we simply don't have as much as we should and the moves we did make lately have been utter failures for the most part. (Ed Reed's backup is probably almost as good as Ed Reed, right?)

There are some familiar old problems that seem to persist from staff to staff and player to player which I place squarely at the feet of the coaches.

Our apparent desire to play 30 feet from a receiver at any given time. It seems like a frightening amount of the the time we are playing extremely far from the line of scrimmage or are are covering our "zone" without being anywhere near a receiver. I don't know if this is just because we have had no faith in our corners to play close to receivers for the last ... oh ... lot of years or not. But it is frustrating to watch. The tackling problem seems new to me but that's also a coaching issue IMO because it's the whole defense that can't friggin tackle.

One thing that might turn out to be a happy accident is Kuechly getting the nod at MLB today since Beason needed to heal up. If he can keep playing lights-out I'd like to see him stay there. That was an impressive game he put out there today.

I'll likely get flamed for saying so, but Kuechly middle / Beason weak side is my preference.

I don't see why anyone would flame you.

More than a few people thought the same thing earlier today.

Kuechly looked like a natural MLB today. If he can keep up that level of play he deserves the job.

Been flamed for it before.

Different system, but when it was Connor in the middle and Beason outside, it actually worked. Kuechly is better than Connor and the WLB is pretty important in a Jim Johnson defense.

That said, I know there's folks who believe any thought of Beason not being in the middle is heresy.

Beason at WLB was nowhere near as good as he is at MLB. That said, Beason this year is nowhere near as good as Beason of years past and Kuechly and Davis on the field looks to be fairly solid with a 1-game sample.
