I'm all for Bill Cowher without researching any other candidates. I wonder how hard it would be for us to switch to a 3-4.

Can't be that hard. Outside of Charles Johnson, is ther really anyone who you would be heartbroken if we didn't keep? Fuggin blow up the D-Line, and let's Extreme Makeover Football Edition that B.

Just to beat a dead horse with the 3-4 talk and considering the mood is bad around here...

I am not a defensive guru or claim to be...but would a combo of 52/59 on the inside of a 3-4 be most advantageous..it would get arguably are two best LB on the field together playing the inside. Lord knows we don't have any other pieces of a 3-4, but its interesting to think about considering the down turn this season has taken.

I would think we would need to beef up at NT and have larger outside linebackers.

EDIT: To answer the OP

GM: Polian, but he might be too old. Maybe Polian with a young gun to learn under him for a few years and then take over after he retires..maybe keep Polian as an advisor.

Coach: Would be excited for Cowher..only because he has HC specific experience.

Player: Depending where we are in the top ten. 9-10..I want a homer pick with S Eric Reid, LSU. Anything before..BPA on defense..being a corner of defensive lineman.

People like Cowher typically aren't the brilliant strategist types Rivera and his staff are. (Chuds brilliance at this point is fools gold I know)

While those "brilliant" strategist types typically don't have a strong fundamental focus.

Very rarely do coaches come along who do both well, and while i wasn't all the way on the bandwagon at the time-Harbaugh appears as if he may have indeed been one of those rarities.

I'm basically saying Cowher isn't the answer for those of you who didn't catch it.

While the college offense we run now is crap as a Base O, it'd be nice to incorporate it into our offense and I'm not sure Cowher is the type to do so. Also think the Coryell is the best possible offense Cam could be in.

So your looking for someone along similar limes that we have now, but has an actual grasp on preparation strategically and fundamentally, and game management, and no, the word stoic doesn't fit in anywhere into this.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
