Yahoo! Sports: Steve Smith Could be Traded

Ok, to put an end to this stupid idea and topic, who do you go to the Panthers games to watch play?

Cam Newton and.......... Steve Smith

you don't trade the guy people come to watch most.

it doesn't pass the smell test

Dumb idea, dumb topic

I come to watch the panthers, don't care who the player is.

But I do agree with you, there isn't much to this. Just some writer's opinion and nothing else. That being said, with Hurney getting fired, just about anything could happen regarding personnel.

CBD has been a source of good info before. I tend to take what he says seriously.

just because a team made inquiries does not mean the panthers have any intention to trade him though. and I don't doubt the Bills and other teams have made inquiries about some major Panthers talent because everyone sees it's about to blow up since the GM has been fired.

but that doesn't mean we accept them without question.

as i said in my other post basically all Panthers fans show up to watch either Steve Smith or Cam Newton, and because of that Smith is going nowhere. in a season like this you don't want to give your fans any reason to not come to the game and trading smith will be just that.

Rivera was just on wbt and said if a situation arises that he and Beane have discussed what we would require to pull the trigger. This was not in reference to any specific player.

I thought this was weird because he made it seem as if we would trade a player for the right draft pick. I find it odd that a coach already on the hot seat and not likely to be retained next year would trade a weapon that could potentially save his job for future draft picks that he will likely never get to use himself.

From a friend. No way of knowing if it is true, just funny that someone went out of their way to tell me and now this.

I was kinda against the idea at first but if I put emotion aside, I can see the logic.. Get something while we can and stockpile picks. He ain't gonna be here after a rebuild anyways.

Thanks man! I know you've been around since forever so I wasn't questioning you as in whether it was credible or not, was just wondering.

I think if some players that we don't use or really even need (cough) DeAngelo Williams (cough) wouldn't hurt to get rid of especially if they are being noisy about their displeasure and if by chance you save your job and are able to turn it around, next season you would have an extra draft pick and a hell of a lot more cap space open,.

Check CBD's post above.

Yeah, I also find it odd that Rivera and Beane would be given complete authority over these issues considering neither will be in the same position next year.

It's beyond odd. It borders on not believable. Furthermore it begs one to ask "Who is really pulling the strings here?"

Agreed. Man, I just don't know what to believe... With all the stuff that has come out since Hurney was fired and with the stuff Rivera has said recently, I just don't get it. Initially, Rivera said the buck stops with him, then today, he said he didn't have any info on potential trades and they'd need to ask Beane. Then if we believe the reports that Hurney was fired because of Rivera, why would JR give Rivera any authority over personnel moves? Yet, Rivera comes out again tonight and says they're considering moves.

And with all of his blunders, it seems improbable that he could do anything to save his job, but if he is given authority to make personnel moves, what does that mean?

LOL, I don't understand it.
