I am right, most of YOU are wrong...and the zone read is STILL a Red Herring

Thanx to nonesuchapanther for posting a link to the Charlotte Observer. This is a copy and paste from an articlle discussing the Panthers' rushing woes...

• Of planned running plays, the zone-read has been used most often, on 80 of the 148 rushing attempts (54 percent). The zone-read involves Newton sticking the ball in the running back’s stomach and either giving it to him or taking it back. When he takes the ball back, he can either run himself or pitching it, based on his read of the defense.

• The zone-read has also been the team’s most effective rushing play, accounting for 407 of the team’s 682 rushing yards (59.7 percent).

• Of those zone-read yards, 319 have come from runs by Newton or the running back in the zone-read action. The other 88 came on six option pitches, when Newton pulls the ball from the running back’s grasp and pulls left or right, then pitches the ball.

• Who is the most effective on zone-read plays? Newton, who averages 5.8 yards per zone-read carry, DeAngelo Williams averages 5.0 yards on those plays, and Jonathan Stewart gains 4.0 yards.

I hate to inform you people of this, but even with the relatively poor execution of the zone read by the Panthers, they are averaging 5 yards a carry running out of it.

Guess what...5 yards a carry in the NFL is really good...

I bequeathe this information to the unenlightend out of compassion...

I am a voice crying out in the wilderness...

And most of you are boneheads...

Despite the gifs this is an interesting post. I wonder if we can get hold of our passing performance out of it, as that would tell the whole picture.

I would guess the results are fairly boom or bust out of this however it does contrast to most people's impressions of it - hence the reaction. If the info about cams success in play action based passing relates to the read option as I suspect it does, then it is actually - by far - our most successful formation.

Bizarre really.

To jt, just because you don't like Tony, doesn't mean this information is any less worthwhile. It is quite eye opening to be honest...

The zone read option is a crap NFL offense.

Watch the games and you'll see why

And I would never run any type of option play in the red zone in the NFL. To me, that's flirting with disaster. It's a great change of pace play if you have an athletic QB, but if you run it enough that an NFL team prepares for it, you're doing something wrong.

Yes but the average is distorted because yardage comes in spurts and big plays. It's not an effective play when we need 2-3 tough yards. Say Cam has 10 rushes for 58 yards. One of those runs is 40, but the other 9 rushes are for 18 yards. Need more consistent gains.

This pretty much sums it up. Only seen JStew hit a big run once during this play. DeAngelo? don't even know. Maybe against that putrid Saints defense. Line up and run it down their throats. How many Ls does it take before you realize you need to switch it up?

the zone read doesnt work because, A) Chud built this team as a pass first team. The offensive line cant create any holes for the rb nor cam. C) It forces Cam to carry too much of the work load D)Ruuning the read option too much takes the wr's out of the game. E) Unless you are playing against carolina, running the same play over and over does not work in the NFL. :)

To all those saying that the zone read is boom or bust in the run game - hasn't that always been the way of our regular running game???

The very nature of averages suggests that over the course of a game we will average 5 yards a carry, so run that 3 times in a row and in theory we would get the first down every time.

I'm not sure why everyone is completely ignoring the statistics here and entertaining that quite possibly the play calling isn't as black and white as people want to believe.

Then what is the problem ?

Why do I feel like the OP is trolling...

Because the answer isn't as simple as people want to think it is. I'm not saying that the zone read isn't an issue and it is reliable enough, just that people are refusing to even consider that it's not the only problem and that we have had success this year using - moreso than standard running plays.

The read option, I am convinced CAN work in the NFL, but you need someone who is more familiar with it than a guy who appears to have studied it for one offseason and then tried to install it as a base offense.

There is a lot of nuances that make it effective that Chud doesn't seem to understand.

    • Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.
    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
