Am I going crazy/Strange Concerns... (Prepping)

What do you mean not exactly? If plants aren't supervised and they lose power and back up generator power, which they will in the event of societal and infrastructure meltdown - then yes, they will blow the fug up.

Edit: the power is needed to supply the coolant obviously, in case I wasn't clear.

EMP/SolarFlare wise, yeah its a fugin mess.

I just don't see this as a huge issue.

Especially were I will eventually be.

i actually anticipate the biggest problem in a breakdown of social order would be the method by which food is domesticated. there relatively few farms in the US and they make up for size by industrial production. a breakdown in social order would mean these processing plants ceasing entirely, disrupting the flow of food at a rate much quicker than, say, fifty years ago (and of course imports would cease as well.)

if things really got ugly, having two weeks of food wouldn't do you a damn bit of good. your best bet is to start practicing horticulture.

I'm working from half remembered info I picked up right after the Japanese tsunami so I admit I could be wrong here...

Our reactors are built so that the un-powered state is that the fuel rods are fully retracted into their coolant and their absorption packages. In the case of total power failure they return to their safest and most stable condition expressly to prevent incidents like Fukashima. Its my understanding that barring physical damage to the control mechanisms or deliberate sabotage the reactors here are much more disaster resistant..

For anyone questioning these replies, I used to work in the nuke biz.

I'm curious about this map... maps are kinda my thing... One thing I notice right off is that there are two marks right near me in ILM. Now we do have the Brunswick Nuke Plant right across the river here, but not sure what the other mark is for? Maybe the GE plant in Castle Hayne? They have nuke facilities but no reactor that I'm aware of.

It is the GE site. It shows on the map because fuel rods are manufactured there. Also, service tools that come back from service jobs are worked on there, and they are HOT. They have to be worked on in special areas while wearing PPE.

The Southport Plant has two "units". They couldn't put them right on top of each other as you wouldn't be able to discern that there were two there. Similarly there are three at the Greenville SC plant, and two at the Charlotte plant, which is why it's all a huge jumble fug right there. http://www.animateds...ukelist1.htm#NC

Pretty sure the markers are for sites and not units.

Correct. NRC won't let anything happen to us.

Yeah Kurb I figured from your FB posts lately that you're ramping it up.. and from your posts here too I kinda sensed it...

Good on you... Part of it is probably having that adorable baby boy to protect, and subliminally that draws out your primitive urges to survive...

I don't know what's going to happen, or when it is going to happen, but the human race as we know it is ultimately doomed. I think it is doomed in our lifetime... It could come locally via US economical collapse... worldly from a dwindling of resources due to overpopulation... pandemics... or even some kind of natural catastrophe... But I do think it is coming... Even if I am wrong, there isn't a whole lot of harm in being prepared, so long as you don't start going too overboard/addicted.
