Voth: Rivera is Staying

With two years of HC experience, I think Rivera will lead us to a winning record next year. Is there a cut off point of Rivera haters whether he stays or goes?

But when has experience EVER made a HC successful? Look at Romeo Crennel, Mangini, Nolan, Singletary, etc. HC unlike players don't get better with experience. The good ones win out the gate, or maximum after their first season.

Can anyone name any new HCs that were not successful their first 2 seasons and turned it around? I just don't understand. In this day and age, only veteran HCs should get this level of commitment to right the ship, given their experience. These days rookie coaches are stepping up and winning out the gate, so why settle for less and more of the same that hasn't worked in the last 12 years? This has fail written all over it.

But I think there’s at least a decent chance interim general manager Brandon Beane could become the permanent general manager, but that may come with some restructuring of the personnel department. The Panthers already have pro personnel director Mark Koncz, college scouting director Don Gregory and salary-cap manager Rob Rogers already in place and all are competent. But fans may not be very happy if the Panthers simply elevate Beane and stick with what they’ve got. I can see a situation in which Beane is promoted, but someone with a strong personnel background is brought in to oversee the personnel department.

However the Panthers structure things, they have to win in 2013 because Richardson isn't going to be patient any longer.

Enter Mr. Gettleman as the personnel director.............

How does one know that the actual candidates haven't already been asked about Rivera? I love so many people want to speculate what happened. Why waste so much energy on things we have no clue about?

i've known lots of experienced failures.

i think it can take more time with some, but i haven't seen that in rivera. i see only a guy who can win when desperate to keep his job and who's players will only step it up when that job is in jeopardy.

not sure how much i like that.

but to your point, experience does not always equal growth. prisons are full of people with tons of experience.

Most coaches aren't good their first couple years of coaching

Want me to run a comparison of how many turned it around after being horrible for 2 years versus how many just weren't good coaches?

Hint: One is much greater than the other

    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
    • I parked in this lot a few times. It would take over and hour to get out of that lot after games. Never again
