2nd worst in the league and we've already cut one vet, made one paycut and two restructures pushing cap hits to next year (which looks even worse at about 20 million over the cap).

So what would bad look like?

Question to those of you who know more about cap space and salaries than I do.

Since we haven't cut Gamble yet, is it possible they are working on a restructure instead? Maybe holding on to him and using the free agency period as leverage to restructure otherwise they'll let him go after teams have already spent their money? I don't know how that whole thing works.

The Saint's have the least amount of cap space, but they have a few contracts that are easier to work around then Carolina. Just doing a new deal with Smith will push them under the cap and they have plenty of contracts they can move around some.

I'd still say Carolina is in the worst cap spot this season. Yea they have Gamble to cut, but that's about it. They could wait till June 1st for Williams and save 5 million in cap space, but that doesn't help a whole lot right now.

i think it's probably safe to assume that they are with him and a few others as well. with gamble and beason the goal on our part would probably be to scrap and re-write the contracts, but i don't see that being successful with gamble.

last resort would be cutting him, but if their goal is to have $8-11mil in cap space (which is the number i think i remember being the target) it would either have to be a significant restructure/re-done contract or just releasing him. he's got to know that it's going to be a flooded market with talent and not much cap money to go around for any team that his best chance is to work something out here.

Given how bad our cap situation is for the following couple of seasons I think we're past the point of restructuring and pushing even more cap hits into the future. Guys are just going to flat out have to take paycuts or we're going to have to cut them. You keep restructuring and pushing off cap hits and you're only extending this cap hell and screwing yourself over for the long term.

We need to go ahead and cut Gamble. Is he a good veteran presence and solid corner? Yes, but getting rid of his services would put us in a much better position to bring in promising (and cheaper) talent at that position as well as others. We have enough leverage with Beason to make re-structuring and/or taking a pay cut a high possibility, Same goes for D-Will. It should work out well.

We can cut Gamble at this point and get under enough to sign rookies. People want to panic about next season, but we'll basically be on the other side of the bonus money on a lot of the contracts where cutting guys like Beason, Williams, or Goddfrey actually gives cap relief. Whereas this year, it's hard for us to do this.

I'm not really worried about the cap this year or next, but I am interested to see if they try to make more room to sign people this year.

Cutting Gamble gives us $7.9M in cap space

DWill as a June 1st cut gives us $4.75M

Putting us $9,024,932 under the cap

These moves also give us an extra $11.4M in cap space for 2014 while restructuring would do the opposite (increase their cap hits for future years).

Nah. We have to be under the cap with our current roster (top 51) by next week.

Then we will also have to be under again when the final roster is set in August.

i think the saints are in worse shape, mainly because they have so many players that need to be re-signed in the next year or two.

this year the biggest deal is jermon bushrod...but they are also up against the wall because their center hits FA this year as well so they have to secure their LT and OC...which won't be inexpensive.

they've got several other "issues" to deal with in re-signing guys and dealing with players who are getting a pretty significant upward tick contractually this year, but they've also got to face the reality that jimmy graham is heading into the last year of his contract and despite being their best/most reliable/most targeted receiver, is only scheduled to make just under $1.5mill (iirc). he's looking at other predominately pass catching TEs who are getting/demanding WR contract treatment so they've got to work out something with him soon. i've heard rumors that he might hold out this year, and i can't say i wouldn't blame him...in fact i encourage it (mainly because it would screw with the saints).

and then they are looking at their defense which was the worst ever. you've got to know that they are wanting to upgrade everywhere. so far all they've done is change DCs but that's essentially putting lipstick on a piglet.

they need more help than we do and have more people to sign with barely more space than we have. they might be able to re-sign a few key people, but they won't be able to do much to upgrade that defense in FA and they don't have a 2nd round pick to help out this year so there's more pressure on them to use FA.

given a choice between the two contract situations...i'd rather have ours.
