Why we don't actually follow the Steeler model

The difference is that Harrison can be cut right now and save his team money, if Dwill is cut right now it either

A. Cost the team 1.4 million this year or

B. doesn't save the team anything till June 1st.

Doesn't help the Panther's a damn bit in free agency, so it's kinda stupid to even compare the two because one helps a team out now and the other doesn't.

Harrison was cut because he couldn't reach an agreement on a contract restructure that reduced his cap over the next few years. Cutting Harrison saved the Steelers 5.105 million on the cap. So the steelers didn't just cut him to cut him, they tried to rework his deal to have him stay with the team and it didn't happen.

Williams creates comparable room if a June 1 cut. The point is to be a better team....the next 3 days isn't the only time to add FAs. There will be waves of guys cut when a June 1 cut will have kicked in as guys cut vets right before the season starts.

Steelers have a LONG history of saying bye bye to their stars. We don't have a short one matching that mindset. Don't get too caught up in the two players talked about that you ignore the model the Steelers actually practice vs us

I'm not convinced DeAngelo has fallen apart, next year will tell the tale.

Furthermore, Harrison is 34 at a brutal position with a guy known for hard hits, DeAngelo is 29 has always split carries and is more of an outside runner than an inside power runner.

No, that's not a bad comparison at all.

Didn't say he had fallen apart....

He is declining and a luxury....he is the type guy the Steelers wouldn't be investing such a large percentage of their cap space towards. Heck, look at Mike Wallace...they won't overinvest a WR.

Williams will be a 30 yr old RB this year...one who hasn't logged 1000 yards for 3 yrs. One who barely averaged over 3 yards a carry 15 games into last season.....

Doesn't matter the type runner he is....bad option at his current cost. Panthers will address that before the season starts....most likely a June 1 cut if he doesn't take a paycut and they will look at the FA pool that is generated as teams take a look at their young guns

Again, Williams vs the worst D in the history of the sport....isn't a good benchmark to reference.

He certainly didn't look very good overall this year....last game greaty causing people to have a selective memory. 30 yr old runners are suppose to decline from what they were.

Cutting a 30 yr old RB....on a team with Cam, Stewart, Tolbert where you can turn around and invest the cap room created in one of our MANY HOLES at starting positions certainly would more likely help than hurt the overall team.

Still think he gets cut eventually if he doesn't take a paycut. We might see that closer to the season and go after FAs that occur in the cuts closer to the start of the year. Will be shocked if it doesn't happen.

Comparing the 2 isn't stupid....they are both examples of the difference in how he 2 teams build there teams. Lots of others guys can be used to point that out....We let our superstars fall apart here and Pitt parts with them.

trying to make an argument on any rb repressing when the team had the oline problems we did last season...really gives you nothing to stand on.

Typical CRA argument.

Yeah, the fact he is now 30.....hasnt logged 1000 yards in YEARS is all irrelevant. Nothing factual at suggesting having him being one of the highest paid runners in the NFL on a team loaded with runners is a bad investment.

Lets also ignore he wasn't demoted 2 seasons in a row....one in reps and one all the way around. I mean, who cares if his style doesn't fit what our offense prefers...

Yeah, OL sucked....yeah, Chud sucked....Williams isn't that 2008 guy anymore. Doesn't mean he sucks but the 2008 guy is what we are paying for. The skills nor offense exist for that guy.

I am a Panther fan more than a Williams fan. How nice, cool, and great he has been here should get thrown out in these talks

See James Harrison...

Pitt parts with there old superstars...on their own accord. Makes a difference. Harrison being cut creates comparable room as cutting DeAngelo with the same type dead money.

We selectively follow the Steeler model

I think that we'd take a bigger hit cutting D Will now...

What kind of cap hit are they taking for cutting Harrison?

Who, by the way, hasn't been very effective the last couple of seasons.

Funny that part was left out.

The Steelers coaches still wanted him bad and don't believe his effectiveness will be an issue this coming season. He was injured last season, but still led his team in sacks (6). If you think about it, he came back too early (the first five games), but once he returned for the last seven, he registered five more sacks, ending the season with two forced fumbles and 70 tackles.

Having nine sacks in 2011 is being ineffective? Hmmmm

Even in 2012, he wasn't a slouch considering his injury.

I honestly don't think it would be a terrible idea to have a policy of not resigning any RB's. Make sure you can scout them, bring them in for 4 years, let them go. If needed bolster with a low level FA from time to time. Keep that money for your OL as they are the ones who actually dictate the running game.

As a June 1 he creates 3.1 million in room we could use in 2013. He creates more room in a bad 2014 scenario as well.

I'd be happy to keep him. He just needs to take a paycut

Honestly, we don't follow ANY winning franchise's model...look at the Pats, Packers, Steelers, they don't hold on to dead weight.

Also, look at how much those are spending on runners (and that is without a bonus runner as QB).

They spend chump change there. Rest of the roster is more important

I agree that he needs to take a paycut but I believe that right now, he's our best option at). Yes Stew is a beast but an injury prone beast. A paycut is in demand, if not...then we should cut him, if the numbers are favorable to us.

Totally agree

He's 29 NOW.

He hasn't hit the 1k benchmark since we got a franchise RB who can also run the ball. Trying to pin that on just Williams is moronic, at best.

The year before the running game was the sole focus of defenses. They knew Clausen wasn't going to beat them. However, after those "down" seasons he still has a career YPC of 4.9

By the same line of "reasoning" we should cut Stewart since he's only eclipsed 1k yards once in four years, has a lower YPC AND more fumbles despite less carries. On paper the only advantage he provides is youth, though you could argue that on running style.
