First Draft Podcast-Kiper/McShay Discuss picks 11-15

Recommended Posts

A detailed breakdown of each pick with this most recent podcast going over picks 11-15.

They have the Panthers taking the usual suspects (Sheldon Richardson, Star, Tavon Austin)

What is awesome is when they speak of other options like Patterson or Vaccaro then rave about Tavon Austin in great detail and argure that he is above those two.

-Discuss Austin's coaches raving about his toughness and how he never missed practices or games with injuries. High character guy who isnt a red zone threat but will make an offense dynamic.

-Spoke of Pattersons concern for a team to have to simplify a playbook as he has little experience in Division 1 playbooks and lacks route concept understanding.

-Mcshay spoke about that he would choose Austin over Patterson bc Austin is finished product with elite playmaking skills.

Some other highlights of the podcats are the potential busts and sleepers.

Busts
- pretty much said that all picks 1-10 are scary like the 48% bust rate of DTs chosen in the top 20 picks. All the Qbs naturally.

-discussed OLB Olgletree and the serious off-field character concerns about him..and that he is a dynamic talent. Ga coaches "but his onfield character is great! WOW"

Sleepers

Andre Ellington..had a bad 40 at the combine but is explosive. Spoke about a HB in from a small school..and a DE that destroyed Alabama's tackles before tearing his ACL.

here is a link so you can hear it.

I think Tavon will be a baller but unless DEdwards signs it appears we will draft a dt for the 3 technique .I would love to see how Shula .views the Austin Cam combo.I believe in the right scheme he will account for 1500 yards per season.Very special guy as a scat back or slot receiver. He could create so many match up problems.

The DT bust rate concerns me--it has for years. It obviously scared Marty H, because he never drafted one. I would not be surprised to see us trade down and grab a NT like Jesse Williams instead of a 3 technique like Richardson.

Richardson is a scary prospect at DT to me. Love his motor, but he has never shown an ability to do much more than shoot gaps. Can he play 2 gap? Larry Warford (G, Kentucky) stonewalled Richardson.

I have also seen comparisons between Richardson and JJ Watt in terms of size, athleticism, and motor.

I do not like drafting DT in the first round, but I think we have to do so. I hope Star or Floyd falls to us, but I doubt it.

Definitley need a DT.. No question.

Honestly I think signing a Ginn, if it happens might Be a sign that WR aint happening no matter who is avail..although we have worked out quite a few..

Yea not much denying we need two DTs. I think NT could be taken in the 2nd.

I think i read the bust rate for 1st rd DTs is 48%......that is a 50% chance which is too high for me.Even the guys like Darius who are not bust seem to disappear in the NFL and are just not as dominate until they have 3 or 4 years in the league.I guess it takes that time to develop the physical and mental aspects of the game. I thought D Edwards was a steal for us and am surprised he is not a panther this year.Richardson sounds like he may be a panther

I'm just hoping we get three starters out of this draft. Not sure how likely it is... Especially if we cannot trade back and pick up a third. I know they will have their struggles and rookie learning curves but if three draft picks can come in and make an impact it'll bode well for our season.

Say we select a DT, a Guard, and a WR or Safety with our first three picks. Do you see those three being upgrades over those on our current roster and getting significant time? The first and second rounder should both be able to win starting gigs and I hope we hit on our 4th in a big way.

The 4th round pick will have to be a great one.i wonder if there is a OG that could start in the 4th?

Mcshay raves about where the Third round is the best part of the draft. I felt sad afterwards.

I really hope we don't draft a dt with our 1st pick. The chances of the top dt's in this years draft class being a bust is too high for my liking. If Lane Johnson falls, we should pick him, if not, i would like to see us get Tavon Austin or Kenny Vacarro then try and get larry warford in the 2nd

    • This is a good story--I LOVED his dad as a person and player--I talked to him at an OTA (he was back for his second stint) and he was talking about Moore (the WR from Wake Forest) being so young.  I was with my teenage son and told him, "This is Taylor.  He and I attended the OTAs when you were in Rock Hill as a rookie."  He jokes, "Was he in diapers then?" and laughed.  I imagine Moose III was in diapers when we chatted that day.  So I really would love for this to work out.  However, his stats do not suggest he was anything special in college.
    • I guess there are signs. The combination of the turf toe, hamstring, and knee issues led to questions about his long-term health and affected his draft stock, causing him to fall to the second round.  Here is what I know about a knee injury.  It changes nearly every aspect of your lower body movement.  So the turf toe and hamstring could be related.  It makes him seem injury prone.  I guess the knee was not the most recent injury, so the others could have been a result of favoring the knee. Johnson did not run the 40 at the combine or pro day.  That suggests there is something he feels might drop his value.  So if you downplay the severity of the injury, have a history of possibly related injuries, and refuse to demonstrate (when given multiple opportunities) that you are fully recovered, don't get mad when your stock drops.
    • I saw numerous reports leading up to the draft that he'd been injury red flagged by numerous teams due to cartilage damage and wear issues that they think could shorten his career.
