Ed Reed, Charles Woodson, Michael Huff

Although I'm not basing it off much, I think being here so long has made Gross content with a culture of losing. He's going to take his payday, even if it costs us some players and wins.

Reed is signed, Woodson is old and I think he's looking for 5+ million a year and is not worth that. Huff I'm very interested in if he comes cheap. I am somewhat excited about Mitchell though, and I think he has a chance to do something here. On his one year contract though, I'm worried he'll break out like Marlon McCree did and be gone after a year.

The Marlon McCree who failed at tipping that miracle pass to Rosario in 2008? Haha I kid.

I'm fine with him breaking out and turning tail. If it gets us wins and in the playoffs it'll only generate more interest in our team down the line. We will probably be eyeing a long term solution to safety next year as well.

Agreed about Gross, which is why I didn't mind letting him go and giving Campbell or a draftee the chance to step in there. If you heard his postgame interviews after we lost, most of the time at the last minute, he seemed completely unaffected. I'm not saying he should be a spewing spout of emotion after losing, that can work against a team leader as well, but he seemed okay with it, and that always bothered me. Not that it is his fault, but it was like he was used to it so it was par for the course. That just never sat well with me, as I think it's kind of what we were dealing with at the end of the Seifert era, which is why we cleaned house. Good players can fall into that "just take it day to day" trap.

As far as safety options, I'm excited about Mitchell's potential, but his coverage advanced stats aren't impressive and are a concern. Regardless, with what we had back there outside of Godfrey and Campbell last year, we need to add talent and depth to compete for the starting spot and at the very least, push the starter week in and week out.

That being said, the market dictates a player's value, and Woodson is NOT going to get 5 mil, so it's very likely he will end up getting offered either a 1 year deal at somewhere around 2-3 mil, just my guess. So, if Gross was cut or restructured, it's very likely that we could make him an offer. Huff should go for slightly below that I'm guessing.

I'd be ecstatic with either.

Yeah exactly what I was thinking. I really felt like Fox's personality and way of going about things rubbed off on Gross, and he's never seemed passionate at all about losing or even winning for that matter. I want that savage, killer instinct on the offensive line, blockers that just want to maul their opponents. At this point, I feel like he's just going through the motions and trying to rely on his expierence/above average ability to get by. Thus you see what happened last season, where he got put on skates a few times due to his skills eroding with age.

You mean that guy who brought us to the Super Bowl and an NFC Championship? Yeah, that was horrible.

I don't know why Gross gets so much flack. He has played at a high level for a long time. While I love Beason too, if anyone should take a pay cut it's him. He's barely seen the field since his contract extension.

  • 2 weeks later...

Now that Charles Woodson is being snubbed by every team including us, would it be smart of the Panthers to attempt an offer? He definitely wouldnt hurt our secondary. Honestly I would just like to buy a Woodson Panthers jersey

Maybe a 1 year deal with limited play's the dude is pretty up there.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
