2012: Panthers ranked 1st in opponents yards per completion

lol as many people on here that were crying how bad our secondary was last year, they were #1 in pass defense? LMFAO I love the huddlers coaching from the couch.

not at all.

opponents yards per completion is a pretty obscure stat and is far from the entire picture. if someone watches all 16 of our games and comes out saying our secondary wasn't a problem then that person is either blind or retarded.

But we were like 15th in pass per attempt.

Which I think was pretty good for what we had, and what we lost. And as the season got better I think those guys got better. Mix in a better the benefit of having a better DL and I think we got something here.

actually it is a 5 way tie for 11th as 5 teams give up 6.9 yards per attempt.

Not to burst the bubble but the team also had the highest completion percentage against. Giving up the least yards per completion is kinda negated when opponents complete almost 70% of their passes. Our secondary was still bad.

It is, but it shows an ability to keep plays in front of you. Given that Naka was starting that alone is a miracle. Norman gave up a lot of catches, but the guy went down immediately.

That's fine but it's not very useful when the offense can just use shorter passes all the way down the field.

Like the Bears did play after play in their final drive to beat us.

Exactly. Giving up shorter passes is fine when you have a big lead or your defense is great at forcing turnovers. When the opponent completes 66% of their passes you are just taking time off the clock. How many games did that help us win last season? Yeah this stat looks nice alone, but looking at other stats (26th in opponent completions per game, 31st in opponent incompletions per game, last in opponent completion % per game, etc.) it shows the secondary isn't nearly as good as some people seem to think.

I wonder how much of that has to do with our inability to stop the run, and putting teams in a lot of 3rd and short situations. Hopefully the new DTs can help with that and really upgrade the defense.

Much of it has to do with little to no safety help and keeping the CB"s way off the receivers to compensate.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
