I can understand why soccer is hard to penetrate the American market; it's such a seemingly inconsequential sport since scoring is a rare affair at quality levels. However, the disparity of talent between clubs is so vast that it's really a huge deal if a lower-level squad can beat one of its bigger brethren, because it's much harder to cover for inferiority in talent in soccer. When you watch a talented team play a lower-level squad it's immediately apparent that low-scoring affairs are the norm between relatively equal squads only, and can turn into blowouts otherwise.

I know what you are trying to say. But that is the norm for pretty much any sport. There are lots of gaps in talent between teams in football and baseball with blowouts occuring virtually every season. You could make a case for baseball not being that way because lower market teams with less talent like the Oakland A's have made the playoffs somewhat consitantly a little awhile ago but still.

Soccer for me is about possession and strategy. Thats what makes it fun to watch. What offense/defense is the team running this game vs the next game based on the opponents. The angular nature of the game (much like hockey), the will to win when you have been running for 90+ minutes, and those late goals in stoppage time that are breathtaking or heartbreaking. If you get really into the sport it is a blast to watch.

I'm excited about our DL.

Me too...

DT's......Star, KK, Cole, Dwan

DW's....CJ, Hardy, Alexander

We "could" have one of the best DLine's in football....throw in our LB's and our Front 7 has the potential to be downright nasty

I believe in giving guys who try until their 3rd year, but I fully expect and somewhat hope to see Fua gone. He's been borderline terrible.

Unless we keep 5 (or go brain dead and keep Fua over Cole), I see Fua gone due to both performance and a numbers game

Cole is awesome. Just that..

BIG, THICK, DREADED, CRAZY, THUMPERR.

Id rather have this front 7 than any other man holy poo.

I think Lotulelei is really underated.

Star was once rated as a top 3 prospect- no sure that qualifies as underrated. His drop was because of a misdiagnosis- which is now a non-issue.

If he can develop as a pass rusher, our front 7 will be sick.

interesting that they mentioned al wallace in talking about him.

i don't know if anyone even knew anything about wallace before we picked him up in '02, but aside from 6 sacks in '98 he had done nothing...and i don't mean pretty much nothing, i mean nothing prior to coming here. he was with the bears in 2000 but i'm not sure he even played a snap for them and then aside from being with the dolphins for some of the offseason in '02 wasn't even with a team.

of course the two situations were a bit different, but i hope the effect on the team is just as positive, esp. after missing so much time.

at his age, i think he really benefitted from taking a year off to heal. he could really make this interior rotation dominant and help take us from one of the worst Ds against the run to one of the best.

yep. i remember there being some discussion prior to the misdiagnosis about him being not just the best defensive player in the draft, but the best player in the draft.

today has been an awful day with the tornado devastation in OK and ray manzarek passing...

puts things into perspective, but I hope Colin Cole has an impact. Our d-line is shaping up nicely not only for this year but for the future.

Gaydosh is also intriguing, we got a lot of big bodies. I can't wait to see how we perform on gamedays.

First, thanks SCP for bringing up this topic and mentioning the folks in Moore, OK.

I would like to point out that Cole gets mention in Person's article today where he assesses 5 needs/concerns. Of course, there is more depth and understanding on the Huddle--he states a very elementary view of the obvious.   I would like to point out that he mentions line depth on both sides of the ball and then never mentions the offensive line.

Cole is 32 and should be a nice rotational reserve this season-maybe one more.   I think it is interesting that you mentioned Gaydosh in a thread about Cole--I think they could be related.  Here is why:

I watched a highlight youtube on Gaydosh. He played 5 technique and the Nose.   He played best at NT.  He has speed, a low center of gravity, and a good first step.  He is a project, and probably would not sign a Practice Squad contract.  I am guessing he needs to make the team or he becomes a Tiger-Cat.

Gaydosh can play both DT positions, so if we were to keep five, he would be an ideal fifth DT.  He can be developed while Cole ages out as the backup.  From what I saw, Gaydosh has some potential, and a coach who knows his stuff could make him a solid NT who can rush the passer.  Star and Gaydosh at NT--doesn't sound too intimidating, but it could be.

I'm not so sure. Some poster here said that Gaydosh would make more money as a practice squad player in the NFL than a starter in the CFL. I could be wrong though.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
    • They also came out for the encore and the singers were dressed in canes jerseys. Pretty fuging cool.
