Star Lotulelei/DT/Utah (Round 1, pick #14): We reported the days leading to the draft Lotulelei was the player Carolina wanted and they would consider moving up to acquire the dominant tackle.  Hence, when he slid to the 14th pick it was an easy decision.  Heart condition or not, this selection represents great value.  Lotulelei controls the line of scrimmage but is more than just a space eater and easily gets outside the box to make plays.  Expect him to be a day one starter and the steal of round one.

Kwann Short/DT/Purdue (Round 2, pick #44): Carolina flooded the defensive tackle position and picked Short in round two.  At the top of his game he offers Lotulelei-type qualities and is a dominant force in his own right.  Short does not consistently play at a high level, which is a problem.  Considering there were few defensive ends, right tackles, receivers or other positions of need available with this pick, Short represents good value and helps solidify the Panthers interior defensive line.

Edmund Kugbila/G/Valdosta State (Round 4, pick #108): The fourth frame was a bit early for Kugbila on our boards but there’s no denying he’s a terrific developmental prospect with great upside.  A massive blocker and underrated athlete, Kugbila offers potential in a variety of blocking schemes.  If he develops at a quick rate Carolina will be set at the guard position with Kugbila and Amini Silatolu, the teams second round choice in 2012.

A.J. Klein/ILB/Iowa State (Round 5, pick #148): From a value standpoint we love the pick of Klein in round five.  The dominant run defender is smart as well as tough, forcing the action in the box.  Exactly what will Carolina do with this pick?  That’s our concern.  They’re loaded at middle linebacker with rookie sensation Luke Kuechly as well as free agent pick up Chase Blackburn.  In our opinion Klein is a two-down defender who will struggle on the outside.  If the Panthers give 3-4 looks on occasion, he will be a natural fit on the inside.

Kenjon Barner/RB/Oregon (Round 6, pick #182): Barner was another value pick and a good way for the Panthers to round out the draft.  He’ll offer depth and speed at the running back position and potentially an alternative if Carolina chooses to release or not sign one of their veteran ball carriers in the near future.

Grade: B. The downside of this draft is the fact Carolina did not come away with a receiver despite the fact the draft was deep at the position.  Then again the Panthers filled needs and did a sensational job drafting for value.  It would not be a surprise if all these picks but Kugbila end up on the 53 in September, and at worst he’s a practice squad player.  These are not sexy picks rather meat and potatoes players with long NFL careers ahead of them.

Exactly what I was going to say. After the 1st round, we should not take a WR unless Getts sees something that no one else does.

He is a project. One that most likely will take time.

If Kugbila doesn't make the 53, then he very well may be the highest drafted player who doesn't.  You absolutely expect your 4th round pick to be on the roster.  If he's not on the final roster, expect imminent Huddle implosion.  Gettleman would take a lot of flack for that and rightly so.

agreed. i like kugbila and think he'll work out, but he's still very much a developmental player which is exactly what people say they didn't want in a WR. 

 

as much as i like kugbila, i would rather we had picked up a RG in FA and drafted patton then.

 

oh well.i hope going all in on the big mollies with the first three picks and using the last couple on positions we were already stacked at pays off.

      I truly do not understand why we rushed him back last season, we were a bad team with an already productive back in Chuba. Brooks looked like he was 60% back and clearly hadn’t regained full movement in his knee and confidence, no surprise he got reinjured. Shame on this training staff, look no further then Chuba returning too soon this season, I don’t care how bad a player wants to come back a training staff is there to protect them. Brooks is a great person and was an amazing player prior to both injuries, I hope he’s recovering well.

      Brother thanks for sharing and all. Just for a 21 year army guy you sure over used your brain power on this interaction little too much...  Not that's Im taking a side or nothing, Ive never been a bully fan * in extreme deals bullying in needed..... I've heard from smart people in and around Panthers, Smitty needed Angie for guidance BADLY.  I've honestly thought if Smitty was born 20 years later, he should have taken a MMA path and not only would he have been a champion but a humbled good man with or without Angie helping him. He has never took off the enmoureous chip on his shoulder and it has branched off as a stick in arse over time too. Still everyone can not be or act the same with emotions, we are chemical sacks of water and bones. He reminds me of brain-washed individuals that can not turn off the switch. Plus he is high on thinking he's smarting than he is.......its a dangerous combo, but that's mainly what gave him the edge in life to live out the American dream......soooo I dare say change, but its sad at the same time. All those poor women that get involved with narcissistic disloyal men, one of the few times I agree to take what ever form them in court...

      Completely agreed.  TBH, we have had so many great players that are in my favorite list, and I hate to narrow it down to one, but Cam is it.  Which is crazy, because you would think it would be more of the guys I grew up watching, but no.  Cam was the single most impactful player to ever out on a football uniform imo.  And like I said in an earlier post, I always felt a kinship with him in a lot of ways…  the way he was treated and judged for the off the field stuff in Florida and having to overcome all of that and fight show at back.  And although I am not a black man, I have always been welcomed by and accepted more by minorities, and thus, I know what it’s like to be judged by appearances rather than the content of your character and who you actually are.  I know what it’s like to be stereotyped and written off or mistreated for your mistakes.  I know what it’s like to be held to a different standard while your peers don’t have to meet that same standard.  So I always related to that.  And the way he came in and just electrified the whole franchise, man…  I still think about it often how much it sucks that because of how talented he was, our staff out so much on him and that ultimately cut his career short.  You’re right, there will never be another Cam…  I think Josh Allen is the closest thing we will see for a long time, but Allen is not the running threat Cam was.  Cam could run you over or around you.  That was THE absolute funnest time to watch our team ever.
