A Couple Pictures and Thoughts From 7/26

Recommended Posts

I took the girls down to camp Friday night. Normally I have a bunch of stuff to share but unfortunately kids can be rather distracting. I'll share what little I did see.

First of All Amini looked like a bad mother:

He is wearing #66 now and he was bossing Star in one on ones. His weakness was always the mental side of things but he looks strong and quick.

Another guy that just stood out from the crowd was #70 Edmund Kugbila. He is a mountain of a man but needs work. It was fun watching him vs. Kawann Short. Short was 4 yards into the backfield in a flash but once Kugbila got his hands latched on he was able to drive him back.

Obviously #89 and #11 looked good but I will list off some others that looked good in the wide receiver group: #83 Taulib Ikharo ran well and caught well. #10 James Shaw looked good and got a few first team reps. #14 Armanti Edwards and #15 Joe Adams looked good as always. (no pads, take this all with a grain of salt). #87 Domenick Hixon looked good as well. I didn't see #19 Ted Ginn make any plays. I didn't see every play so he might have done well but I did see him line up in the wrong spot and Cam had to correct him.

#91 Colin Cole completely bossed #62 Jeff Byers in one on one drills. I mean he drove him 7 yards into the backfield and threw him to the ground.

Jon Beason was kind of warming up with the team and he definitely had a hitch in his giddy up. Just doing a basic little side step warm up he looked to be nursing an injury. It left me with a bit of concern.

The second kicker Morgan Lineberry #5 has no shot. He's neither accurate nor powerful. Total camp body.

#56 AJ Klein reminds me of Kuechly in the run game. He's not always in the proper position but he reacts well in the run game and closes on the ball carrier in traffic.

The Offense spent a nice chunk of practice on passing plays designed for the TE. It was more of a walk through but noticeably different from last years content.

I did not see Star doing anything great. Again I missed large chunks of practice with the nieces but the only time I noticed him was when Amini threw him to the ground.

#16 Colby Cameron just didn't look like an NFL QB. Even with Jimmy you can see some arm talent, some accuracy. Cameron looked deficient in every type of throw.

That's about it. A very uneventful practice. As always none of this should be taken seriously it's the first day of camp.

On a personal note my niece has become a very big fan of #77 Byron Bell. They have met a few times over the years and he always treats her like a Queen.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
