Roster move (reserve TE)

If this doesn't emphasize the shift from the Chudzinki offensive philosophy to the Shula offensive philosophy I don't know what does.

In what way?  Chud's best success came when we had two legit well-rounded TEs in Olsen and Shockey.  IMO, this move signifies we're still trying to do that.  Not saying that Pianalto is Shockey, but if he can be half of that, he'd still be a very solid #2 TE.  Hartsock and Brockel are pretty much pure blockers.  Hell, let's be honest, Brockel is a FB who can line up at TE.

Chudzinski utilized pass catching TE's since his time as a TE coach in Miami.  He has been known for developing outstanding pass-catching TEs.  The fact that Shula will emphasize a more balanced offense, with a more traditional run stile means obviously, a pure pass-catching TE has no spot in this offense.  This is why Rosario (220 pounds) was released.  This is why we brought in a TE who is over 255 pounds to replace him.

Some videos I found

Apparently, he was picked up by the Bills, then the Bucs,  Caught four passes for the Bucs in 2011 and spent the 2012 season out of the league.

His quote on Rotoworld

TE Nelson Rosario was waived in a corresponding roster move. Pianalto caught four passes in 13 games for the Bucs in 2011, but was out of the league last season. He's just a camp body.

Is the general consensus here that Olsen has been a good blocker thus far? He really hasn't. The worst example is the Broncos game last season. I could not understand why Chud allowed Olsen to make Von Miller look like Lawrence Taylor all game long. But it wasn't just Von, Olsen is not a good blocker. Though he really makes up for it as a pass catcher.

Olsen isn't a great blocker, but he can be an adequate blocker.  Virtually any TE asked to take on a pass rusher of Von Miller's ability is going to look pretty bad doing it.  You can't put that task on a TE.

That's the thing that surprises me about the signing of Pianalto and why I think Leeroy's theory is off.  Pianalto is definitely a receiving TE.  He can block, but he's definitely a receiver first.  He's a pretty well rounded player.  His issue in the NFL (injuries aside) is that he's not a standout athlete at this level.  He's a receiving TE who can block, but he's not a guy who can stretch the seam.  He has marginal speed at best for a TE, but the guy can catch anything.

I was reading an article on Brandon Williams and though he might not be great at one particular thing, he is probably the most complete tight end we have on the roster.

Rivera mentioned that he loves the way Williams gets up at the point of the attack and was really impressed with his blocking skills.

Hopefully Williams stays healthy and is able to secure a roster spot.
