Is The Season Opener A "Must Win" For You?

I'm talking about 2003 because earlier in the thread the question was asked about the last time this team won a season opening home game. Not the home opener, and not the season opener, but an occurance of both. Someone answered 2003, which is correct.

I'd certainly agree that it would set a great tone moving forward, but as others have said, Seattle is projected as a candidate to reach the Super Bowl. Losing to them without looking like garbage is far from a death knell to a winning season or playoff hopes.

Ah I see.  A week 1 game at home, that the Panthers won.  Yes that would be '03.  But, that was against the Jaguars who had missed the playoffs the year before.  This Week 1 test is the hardest the Panthers have had since...I can't even remember when.  The Seahawks are stacked...and while I agree a close loss wouldn't sting as much as a blowout, I think that this is as close to a "must-win" game as a Week 1 game can be.  I could see a win propelling the Panthers to the playoffs.  A loss, and who knows.  Probably another 7-9 year.

How in the blue hell can opening against a favorite for the Superbowl be a "must win". How the f**k does that make any sense? You guys better prepare your a**holes, the chances of this team beating that Hawks team are slim and everyone knows it. NO one expects the Panthers to win that game. It may be a  "must win" for the Seahawks, as i sated, they are potential SB contenders. The Panthers are in yr 3 of a rebuild, losing to potential SB contenders is just a part of that.

With that said, its year 3 of a rebuild, time to start showing some improvements. I think im on the thought of play well and lose, no big deal, play like garbage and get blown the hell out? Eh, this rebuild clearly on the wrong track.

To be the best, you have to beat the best.

If not now, when?

...and that's the problem with our team and our fans, it's never now and never when.

There are many teams in this league that have pulled off big upsets.  The Panthers need to be one of those for a change.

Every player on every team goes thru the schedule looking for wins and losses. So do the analysts and talking heads, right now we are looking like a win to most of our opponents, I mean seriously who do we scare? We lost to friggin KC last year. We struggled with Mamas Frijoles Oakland. We intimidate no one, and the only way to shake up this league that this year will be any different is to win early and often.

Even when we win during the preseason, they show Cam throwing an interception, making it look like we lost and Cam sucks. That is our narrative right now and I am sick of it! Rivera has a bad track record, Shula has a bad track record, Cam has a bad track record and this team has a bad track record.

I don't live in NC, and outside of your state nobody respects you, he'll even football fans in state don't respect your team (per huddle posts), to add to that stink is the bobcats/hornets. The only fear generated by your state comes from the college basketball teams. Many are feared and respected!

We lose that first game and our team will fade even farther into the media abyss...

Winning is a habit, it starts in practice, you don't plan for chip Kelly's offense the week of the game by running wind sprints. It's too late then, you start running sprints the first day of training camp, if they run 140 plays during training camp, you run 140+ plays during your training camp. My local HS football team is probably in better shape than the panthers. They send coaches to universities with big athletic depts. to get new training methods. Most of the coaches on the staff have collegiate playing and coaching experience. They have an indoor football practice facility, and a weight room better than most of the colleges in this state not named Auburn or Alabama. They have the multiple thousand dollar x/o system for watching game film, they play teams from out of state on a regular basis so they can be nationally ranked. In other words they have a system that pretty much guarantees 10+ victories a year and 3 state championships in the past few years. Then they hired a coach from a school that never had beat them, and last year using his system they lost several games.

I remember some one on this site saying that the eagles might do well for about 12 games then, their players would be worn out. Let me ask you this...

If we could win 10 of the first 12 games, and then we lost the rest, wouldn't that still be a better team than the Panthers have been in over five years.

    • Ill just be happy if Tepper doesnt make another locker room appearance the rest of the season.
    • The question I wonder involves putting the cost behind us.      At this point he's here, so does the premium paid even matter anymore? It set expectations no doubt, and they weren't met.  He's been bench-worthy bad, but he's come back and looked first average, above-average to maybe great, and then downright bad again.  Now we're back on a good trend again.  Absolute rollercoaster.   So what level of performance deems him a viable option to hold?  He's looked absolutely incapable of moving an offense at times, and others like a guy you can "Purdy" with some dimes sprinkled in.     So, if he continues on this 2 game trend and shows consistent average to above-average play, we're treading into tricky territory.  Such a big investment but he tops out as a top-15/20 QB option.  It's Alex Smith KC type vibes. Are we going to be sitting at 7-10 come end of season and feel kind of meh? It's right at that fringe of what is worth it.  If he doesn't re-sh*t the bed, we may be best suited to go BPA next draft and see the 2026 progression.  And that will be the final make/break year.  What I can see if he doesn't fall apart and things look manageable: He may end up being the average precursor to finding the great talent that you can build the team around.  How Alex Smith was in KC.  They built that with him (not around him) until they eventually got Mahomes.  Heck, think back to Trent Green/Warner.  So, BY can manage, we may get some success, but if a stud comes along, we bail and roll with the new gun.
    • We win 2 games largely due to historic rushing from our backup RB we signed in free agency and now the huddle is regarded as the most toxic place on the internet because not everyone shares the same opinion that Bryce Young has proven himself to actually be a long term starting QB yet. This place was just as ugly through the prime Cam years. People complained about him even when he was producing and we were winning the division. Things were just as ugly through the Jake years. Sometimes people would get so irate and fed up with him they would literally be calling for his head. How about we just give eviscerating one another a breather and see how this team and Bryce look on the road. Nothing anyone can say is going to make a difference until then.
