Rivera says we are done signing linemen.

Question:  Assuming we stick with what we have and acknowledge the right side isn't as strong as it should be, how much of that deficiency can be addressed by using unbalanced line, and two TE set formations, etc.?  I realize that may telegraph or narrow down plays making it easier for the defenses to read (or not?), but it isn't like our OL problems are a secret.

If your OL sucks....

and your offensive scheme is a vertical pass attack and a power run game...you better prepare to suck when you play legit defenses. No real way around that one IMO. Saw it last year.

I doubt we are done. Rivera is just not going to say our line is crap. Didn't he say we weren't going to sign anyone before we signed Wharton?

Is Wharton signed if Amini isn't hurt....leaving us virtually with no one to play. DG has to put in enough effort to at least give RR somewhat of a shot to swim instead of sink.

I kind of buy this theory, but at the same time don't put too much stock in it.

If this organization hired a coach and never allowed him to actually build his roster before they fire him again, even to the point of the next GM intentionally refusing to allow it, then it's a piece of poo organization.

You can't give someone "playoffs or you're fired" and then refuse to let them improve the roster. That's just too low, and it's terrible business.

Well, I am a big believer that the Big Cat has created some very bad scenarios with his GM/HC pairings.

Hurney should of been fired when Fox left. He wasn't.

Hurney drafted a draft for no one in 2010 with a lame duck coach and no clue who was coming in.

Fox got fired. Hurney then signed Fox's roster to mega deals. New coach hired and stuck with a Fox squad.

Now a new GM, doesn't get a say in his HC only knows he is likely gone next year....so why dig a hole and waste money on something you are about to scrap. Just plan for 2014 and if RR is still here then give him help or move in your new direction. DG is making wise moves with 2014 in mind.....situation he walked into doesn't justify the state of his OL. He just isn't going to waste resources on Rivera's O. Will give him enough to compete.

That isn't DG bashing. That probably is the right call if you find yourself in his position. Big Cat as always, deserves more criticism. JR is a great businessman.....but I am a fan of what the sport team does on a football field.

Is o-line really that coach dependent? That seems like the one position on offense you can sign and draft without worrying who the coach will be. DG has drafted scheme dependent d-linemen; unless he knows for a fact that his next coach will run a 4-3.

I would think scheme would dictate what you wanted your OL to look like...

Based on what we know about DG...he seems as if he would hire a 4-3 front 4 inspired coach. He has spoken a fair amount of his idea of how you play the game.

True, but I would say most of the coaches in the NFL are 43-minded guys, anyway. So, DG just thinks that whoever they get would likely have pieces here they could use. Or, DG already has in mind who he would like to be the next coach, if it comes to that.

And someone like Star could fit the NT position rather easily if needed to, he has that type of ability/size/run defense that could be used in that situation.

    • It's not impossible to go from worst to first.  We kept Evero because anyone in there right mind knew our defense was destroyed by injuries, not the scheme.  Evero has been given a plethora of talent between free agency and the draft, not to mention getting DB back. I fully expect our defense to be very good.  I have no reason to think Jones would say something like that unless he truly felt like that.
    • We would’ve played Florida and lost in the 1st instead of the 3rd round.  Montreal would have been the 8 seed.
    • I can't get behind a purely subjective re-draft as a method of defining "top-10 QB" status. That invites bias based on vibes/hypotheticals and can ignore actual on-field performance. You and others have said that Bryce has to be a top-10 QB to justify the pick. That's a high bar, which I'm not against, but we need a clear, consistent way to measure it. When I bring up metrics that Bryce has registered in the top-10 in like BTT%, P2S ratio, catchable deep ball rate, etc... they're waved off as either irrelevant or the expected baseline performance. Meanwhile, volume stats like passing yards or win-loss records, both of which depend heavily on roster talent, health, and coaching, are treated as definitive. That's where the inconsistency kicks in. If no performance metric ever counts in his favor and the answer is always going to be "he should be doing that," then we're not evaluating him... we're just holding him to a curve he can't win against. If this is really about performance standards, then let's define them. But if it's just about confirming prior takes based on height and weight, then let's call it what is it and stop pretending that this is a football analysis discussion.
