Spotrac's Greg Hardy Contract Forecast(Bigger than CJ'S deal)

We can only have so many huge contract players but I think the D-line is the best place to sink tons of money besides the QB position.

Now, that's not to say I'd be happy with a deal that huge.  There are different variables every year.  If that website had done the same thing when CJ was getting his what would the contract have looked like?   We overpaid by quite a bit because there was a strong market for DE and Atlanta was a leader in wanting CJ.  Those are the two reasons we overpaid.

With Hardy, it's a year before his contract is up.  The market isn't the same as it was when CJ got paid.  We can still use the franchise tag on him and almost get out cheaper to pay him that over 2 years after this year.  He's making almost nothing now.  Next year would be around 11 million for the tag and 13.5 or so for teh year after.  So, in essense it's the same as resigning him on a new 3 year deal for 25 million and none of it except the present year is guanteed.  He get hurt at any point we can cut him and only owe him that years salery.

That's our leverage and why Hardy will not get an 80 million dollar contract.

There is no one else except Cam we would franchaise and we would not have to do that for another two years.

He'll get paid his money for sure. It won't be this insane, but he'll get it. $60 million, my guess. Guys have different definitions of "proven". Hardy has had one season already, with no defensive tackles, that would make teams pay him.

Given that the cap is flat and there will be tons of free agents, he won't get a huge contract on the order of some of those mentioned unless it is somewhere else.  Look at Chris Long last year with a 5 year, 60 million contract.  This offseason the money went down and next year it will go down even more.  The days of the huge contracts are done until the cap goes up.

I am concerned that we won't get a contract done as his agent will hold out for too much and want to shop around.

Now that I said it, he will sign tomorrow.

if talking about tagging.

If Cam is franchised it means his 5th year option was picked up....which means he and Luke's rookie deals run out at same time.

don't all top 10 (or is it 15) come with the 5th year option automatically built in? or it might even span all 1st rounders. it'd be a question to ask one of the contract dudes or jones/person

“If a player is picked 1-10, then the 5th year option is going to be the average of the top-10 players at the respective player’s position.  So, if you’re quarterback and go number-two in the Draft, then your fifth year option salary will be the average of the top-ten quarterbacks.  The option is exercised after the third season, so it would be based upon the top-ten quarterback salaries at that time.  If you’re picked 11-32, then the 5th year club option is the average salary of the top 3rd through 25th player in that position.”

found it. yeah all 1st rounders have a 5th year option built in

Did any of you honestly think we'd lock up a double digit sack DE for cheap?

Should you lock up a guy based off one season to big money....when the position isn't a glaring hole?

What are we the Panthers? Yeah, that is what other teams say
