Ron Rivera......before we knew

When watching this press conference there was definitely a reason to be excited. Ron was confident and really commanded the room. He said all of the right things and it is easy to see why he was hired. He honestly appeared to be the man for the job and he might very well be. Remember this was before we drafted Cam and Jimmy was talked about as being the franchise quarterback.

Why do you guys think we haven't seen him live up to this first press conference? Were expectations to high after Cam's success? Did/Does he not have the right personnel? The right staff? Is JR too hands on?

It just seems like the guy in this press conference isn't coaching this team.

Am I the only one that isn't ready to just hate Rivera?

One of the few.  To me, growing pains for a new HC are acceptable and to be expected.  However, Ron hasn't shown much growth, just a lot of pain so far.  He's done a great job with his strengths (making a strong defensive unit) but hasn't improved his weaknesses at all as far as I can tell (commanding the unit as a whole to include OC/ST/etc, game/clock management, growing a set of testicles on 4th and short, learning from his mistakes and taking ownership of deficiencies, etc).

No. If he turns out to be unable to turn around his tenure and ends up as a poor coach that doesn't change that he seems like a genuinely good human being whose best simply couldn't cut it at the head coach level. But I'm going to retain optimism until I see no reason to have any.

Yet despite all those shortcomings he has taken a 2-14 team and brought us to 7-9.

I agree with game management criticisms entirely and it may be the thing that gets him fired, but he hasn't been terrible by any means overall.

Two losing seasons isn't enough for you? I promise more of us will get behind him if he starts winning. Then we will be like one big happy family. I might even buy you a beer at a game.

    • Bryce just didn't maximize Hunter Renfrow's skills. ***rant incoming*** But this isn't just about Bryce Young mistiming passes to Renfrow so bad that he's going to get Renfrow killed or hurt, this is also about incompetentence by Dave Canales. Renfrow can still play. He's putting DBs in a blender out there---making them play twister at the top of routes to keep up with him, and dumb Dave has the nerve to cut him. How about putting Hunter in the best position to help the damned offense by appreciating his skill set, DC? You're letting Bryce's apparent inability to make an accurate throw, or at least his timidity to push the ball down the damned field cloud your judgment and miscalculate talent---or maybe just miss on talent just as much as Bryce misses passes due to playing pussified football. It's fúcking unacceptable.  Speaking of misjudgment, I don't know if it's Dan Morgan or Canales, but Eijiro Evero is not the business at DC. I have said a few times that his scheme is not conducive to run-stopping efficiency. Hell, and after watching some clips of plays, now I absolutely know why. The gaps are at least half open before the play even fúcking starts. You are setting the opposition's RBs up for success with too much damned space at the line and in the second level. If our guys are taken out in these areas---at the line and in the second level---then the defense is screwed because it must rely on the safeties to cover too much ground to make the tackle. At least put Ransom in who is motivated to seek and destroy if you're going to effectively leave the safeties on an island.  And speaking of rookies, get our two new defensive ends more snaps to see if we can't generate more of a pass rush. For all the good the continued sorry display of defense that you're putting out for fan's to see (Ejiro, Dave and Dan), you may as well get the rookies generously involved. Fúck that money we gave second-rate (maybe second-rate) vets, we need a damned spark getting after the QB. Watch it, it's just another breakdown of the sh¡t we were subjected to last week. I say this with all respect: Fúck you, Dave! Fúck you, Dan! Learn how to run a fúcking franchise. Maximize the players, regardless of what you think you're supposed to do by the book. Cut the dead weight before another season is lost and fans lose interest in September. EE is "Ew!" Or for emphasis "EEw!" /end rant
    • But nobody is saying he is a good deep ball passer.  But the facts are since he's returned from his benching, he has been throwing downfield.  Whether you want to credit the scheme, Bryce himself, or whatever, he has been pushing it deep.  Not to any positive results mind you, but it has been happening.
