Short 2011 Draft Review

I'm looking at the Steelers-Bengals pregame show tonight, and I'm seeing AJ Green warming up.  I'm thinking AJ Green, one of the top receivers in the league already.  Then I think about Cam and his progress.  Obviously, his production has be stalled due to this inept staff.  Yet still, I'm starting to hear more and more that Cam is not a pocket passer.  That he needs to run more as a way to settle him down, and get comfortable.  This kind of talk bothers me very much.  I like Cam's running ability, I always saw it more of a trump card, that it should be that way.  Yet if you were to ask me to pick between the best athletic QB and the best pocket passing QB, I'd choose the pocket passer 1,000,000% of the time.  Give me a guy who can dissect defenses with his arm, and I'll give you a shot at the superbowl.

So concerning the topic, a lot of people wanted AJ Green in the draft.  (For me it came down to two guys.  Either Patrick Peterson or Marcell Dareus.  I went with Dareus.)  Again I'm looking at Green warming up, arguably already the best receiver in the game.  I'm thinking did we make the right choice here?

Green here with Clawful throwing to him...pass. However, the team would have sucked enough to get Luck. Now a Luck to Green combo, yes please! Get your time machine ready!

I think Derek Anderson would have still been brought in due to his connections with Chud.  Anderson to Smitty and Green might have got the job done.

Yeah, because Cam has had NO success passing from the pocket in 2011 or 2012.

You nailed it, dude.

I didn't say he didn't have success.  Yet, he's regressing now, and of course his accuracy has always been on and off.  I'm wondering if there will be a day where Cam will be thought of as dissecting defenses with his arm, or will he always just be another athletic QB with a strong arm.  I'm getting impatient now.

Cam's not a great pocket passer. We need to stop trying to force a square peg thru a round hole and play to his strengths.

That's what I'm afraid of.  If that is the case, we need to split ways right now.  There will never be a day where an athletic QB is successful consistently.  NFL defenses are just too fast and too smart.

I don't get where you get the idea "athletic" QB don't use their brains and don't dissect defenses with their arm? You are never going to rush more than you throw in a season as a QB.

Um. There was this guy named Steve Young. He was athletic. I also remember him being pretty successful.

    • I'm not sure that in a fair QB competition that Young would beat out Jones.
    • That's why I said stats aside. I lived in CO during Allen's college career and didn't have kids at the time so I watched most of his games. Bruh, I'm telling you. Balls just spraying all over the place. The type of throws where you're honestly trying to figure out who he was even trying to throw that one too. It was crazy. Richardson was inaccurate in college but at least you could tell who he was trying to throw it too. He threw a lot of early in the game Cam Newton type balls where it seemed like he was just a little too amped up and everything was a few feet high. Richardson's misses looked like they were maybe fixable with working on his footwork, release, etc. Josh Allen's misses looked like "ain't no way you're fixin' that poo, dude has a cannon equipped with no sights". LOL Huge props to the Bills for evaluating him as fixable and indeed fixing him.
    • A lot can change over the next week, but here is my best 53-man roster (note: I'm just basing this on guys on the 90 man roster currently).
