4th and long.... and going for it?

I find it hard to believe this thread has gone on so long.  It is testament to one poster's ability to argue and never admit they are wrong.  All the discussion about what was more disrespectful or worse is irrelevant.  There is an unwritten rule in the NFL that good coaches who want to be around for awhile and who respect football don't usually cross.   And that is you play the game hard as long as the outcome is in question.  When it is not you do what we did which is not run up the score.  The same as when the game is over you shake hands at the middle of the field.  Do some jerks ignore that or refuse to do it?  Yes.  Does that make it right?  Absolutely not.  In the end most folks remember this is a game and there are both unwritten and written rules you follow.  Like taking cheap shots when no one is looking.  Do some players do it?  Absolutely.  Have some of our own done it?  Absolutely.  But it doesn't make it right and it has no place in modern football.  I laugh when I see people use Sean Payton as a justification for doing something as if that guy has ever has any credibility as a coach with integrity.

You can make all the excuses and justifications you want but I am glad our coach dd what he did.  I think anyone who would have done anything else is revealing something about their inner character rather than making a legitimate argument,

I personally don't like when a team opts out of points....in the NFL.  I especially don't like it when the opponent hasn't thrown in the white flag and agreed to just run the clock out.  Again, Ravens game yesterday wasn't different....they didn't need those points.  They could of ran....but they kicked a FG with 1 minute and up by 3 scores.

You don't have to agree.  It is a my personal preference.  A personal preference isn't wrong.  I liked the 2007 NE Patriots F U season.    You can dislike it.

I can name countless of examples of respected coaches who have taken the points in comparable situations....I didn't like it.  No biggie, unless you want to pretend like it is

You guys can say what you like but it was one of the oddest, most pointless calls I've ever seen. If you are hell bent on sportsmanship then take the knee and spare our line a few body blows.

And if you can't see why we wouldn't want to run up the score on a team that had not shown the ability to cross the 50 yard line but 1 time all day, then there isn't much to discuss.

And for every example you come up with I can you 20 times the amount of guys not running up the score.  I understand you would have rubbed it in and made it worse.  That is your personality and your preference.  I still wouldn't agree with or or like people who act that way.  And yes a personal preference can be totally wrong.  A person can choose to act like a jerk but it doesn't make it right or make them less of a jerk even though it is their personal preference.

Running up the score is different than kicking that FG....two different things.

It's the NFL, you take points when you have them unless you can end a game and prevent the play from continuing.

Giants had two more possessions after that....and weren't content with ending the game as quickly as possible.....

Lets not forget that a lot of the guys both on the sidelines and on the field and in the offices are friend or at least respect the folks on the other side.

The 3 points wouldn't have mattered not one iota. Not yesterday, not at the end of the season, never.

And to the folks saying that this is the NFL and sportsmanship isn't as important I would say this.  Where do you think kids are learning it from?  Sure they get some of it from their folks and their coaches, but at the end of the day its the guys playing on Sunday that are going to have the biggest impact.  The way a second string CB acts on Sunday is going to carry far more weight that what their coach tells them to do on Friday night.

...and yeah I just played the "Do it for the kids!" card

And as slim as it is....pts can matter at the end of the season. Has happened to Carolina in their short history...

So you don't need to run a score up....but you do need to take pts when you can't run the clock out

wtf this entire thread.

you get a first down the game is effectively over. you don't get the first down you win 38-0 instead of 41-0.

pretty obvious if you ask me

I don't believe we were trying to convert that 4th down....I thought that was pretty obvious

And there were 3 offensive possessions after it....so if we got the first on a play not intended to get it.....game doesn't end

I may be a tad slow. After all I've been married for over 20 years. But... wouldn't adding a FG be putting more points on the board. Would that not be construed as running up the score? You can't have it both ways.

Actually there were 4 more possessions. Eli had 1, Painter had 1, and they both threw the ball trying to move the team. DA had 2 possessions. So once again, you be wrong.

C'mon man. Let it gooooooooooo.
